How long she can keep the same earrings in is decided by the metal rather than the calendar: indefinitely, if it's a named stable one and the pair is in good condition, with a weekly removal for cleaning. What limits it isn't time. It's the material, the condition of the coating if there is one, and whether anything gets cleaned. Two different questions
People asking this usually mean one of two things.
"Can she leave them in permanently?" Yes, on a settled piercing, with a stable named metal, provided you take them out weekly to wash the earring and the lobe.
"How long before the hole closes if she takes them out?" A settled piercing of several months won't close in a few days. Newer piercings close much faster, and that timeline belongs to whoever performed the piercing.
What actually limits how long she can keep earrings in
Not time. An earring doesn't expire.
The material. A stable, named, corrosion-resistant metal can stay in for years without much consequence. An unknown alloy or an unnamed base metal under a coating is a different situation, because contact accumulates the entire time it's in.
The coating, if there is one. Every coating wears through, first at the post where friction concentrates. From that point she's wearing whatever the base metal is, and she'll wear it continuously until somebody notices.
Cleaning. Skin inside the channel sheds cells and produces oil continuously, and with an earring blocking both ends none of it washes out. Earrings that never come out mean a channel that never gets cleaned.
The back. Butterfly backs migrate further onto the post with ordinary wear, and a back that has crept too far compresses the lobe.
Why the material matters more the longer they stay in
Sensitization is cumulative.
The immune system doesn't react to a metal on first contact. It reacts once it's been exposed enough, over enough time, to learn it. That threshold varies between children and it can be reached after months or after a decade.
So the total exposure is what counts, and total exposure is contact time multiplied by release rate. Continuous wear maximizes the first half of that equation.
Which means continuous wear is entirely reasonable with a metal that releases very little, and is exactly the wrong approach with a metal nobody can name.
Nickel allergy affects around one in five people in North America. The American Academy of Pediatrics reported in 2020 that nickel allergic contact dermatitis in children has nearly quadrupled over three decades, with at least 1.1 million children in the United States already sensitized.
The weekly routine that makes continuous wear work
Take them out once a week.
Wash the earring in warm water with a little mild soap, rubbing the post gently between finger and thumb. Rinse and dry thoroughly.
Wash the lobe front and back with the same, and dry it properly.
Leave them out for an hour or two if the day allows, so the channel gets airflow.
Check the back tension while they're out. There should be a small gap between back and ear when they go back in, and no indentation in the lobe.
Put them back in clean and dry.
That's the whole thing. It takes about two minutes and it's the difference between continuous wear that works and continuous wear that slowly causes problems.
When to take a pair out for good
Not on a schedule. On a signal.
The post has changed color. If the front still looks gold but the post has gone a darker steel color, the coating has worn through and she's now wearing the base metal. A worn coating can't be restored.
Marks appear on her skin. Green usually means copper. Dark gray usually means abrasion or a reaction with products.
The back no longer holds. A butterfly whose arms have splayed won't grip again reliably.
Dullness in patches. Wear concentrates at contact points, so patchy dullness is the signature of a coating going.
Anything sore, itchy or crusting that follows this particular pair. Note which pair it is, because that's the single reason so few reactions ever get traced to a product.
What about at night?
Sleeping in earrings is fine with a suitable pair, and it roughly doubles daily contact time.
That matters a great deal if the metal is unknown and much less if it's named, stable and tested. It also concentrates pressure, since the earring is pressed into the lobe against a pillow for hours without her moving to relieve it.
If the ears are already sore, a night off helps and a settled piercing won't close overnight.
Does she need a rotation?
It helps, for a practical reason rather than a material one.
Rotating between two pairs means each one gets cleaned regularly and neither is ever in for months without attention. It also means the channel gets a break from any single post.
The caution is what she rotates to. Swapping between one known pair and four unknown ones is how mixed materials enter daily wear, and it's also why reactions rarely get traced to a culprit. If she rotates, rotate between pairs you can name.

How quickly does a settled piercing close? A piercing of several months is stable over a few days out. Newer piercings shrink much faster, and that question belongs to whoever performed it.
Is it bad to never change them? Not inherently, provided they come out weekly for cleaning and the material is known. What causes trouble is a pair that stays in for months untouched.
She wants to swap earrings constantly. Is that worse? More handling means more chances to introduce an unknown material and more fiddling with the piercing. It also means more cleaning opportunities. Either pattern works if every pair is one you can name.
Should she take them out for sport? Check school and club rules, which often require it for contact sport. Otherwise it's a comfort and safety-of-catching question rather than a material one.
