It is found in the vast majority of fashion earrings, including many that call themselves hypoallergenic. purepixxi uses S316L Surgical Steel, solid throughout — no plating, no coating, no hidden base metal. S316L contains nickel, as almost all surgical steels do, but it is chosen because it resists corrosion and holds onto it: nickel release measured under EN 1811 was not detected.
S316L Surgical Steel is the grade used for implants and surgical instruments inside the human body. It resists corrosion, which is what keeps release low: nickel release measured under EN 1811 was not detected. It resists tarnish and rust. The high-polish mirror finish is smooth and non-porous, so there is less for build-up to cling to.

The post has a precision notch that the Butterfly Back clicks into and holds against. It is far less likely to work loose than a standard butterfly back, which is held by friction alone. The scroll-style butterfly is shaped to give the exact amount of skin contact for comfort and cleanability, while keeping the back secure through swimming, PE and playgrounds. It releases with deliberate pressure, which means it stays on when it should and comes off when you want it to.
purepixxi earrings are designed for fully healed piercings. Most piercings require six to eight weeks to heal on the surface, though full healing takes longer. We recommend consulting your piercer before switching earrings. Once healed, S316L Surgical Steel is among the most biocompatible materials available and is well-suited to sensitive young skin.
Warm water and a small amount of mild soap is all you need, once a week, with the earrings out. The S316L Surgical Steel surface is smooth and non-porous, so there is less for build-up to cling to than on a surface that has corroded or worn. Pat dry after cleaning.
