S316L Surgical Steel finished with Aunix™ 24K, our engineered gold finish. Pure 24 karat gold applied by electrodeposition. No mixed alloys. No base metal exposed at any point of skin contact. The Butterfly Back is precision-engineered to resist loosening and over-tightening.

What it does
Resists corrosion. Resists tarnish. Releases almost nothing.

S316L Surgical Steel is chosen because it resists corrosion, so nickel release measured under EN 1811 was not detected. The 24K Pure Gold surface has no alloy in it at all, so no copper and no silver. Those alloys, found in 14K and 18K gold, are a common cause of contact reactions in sensitive skin. Designed for everyday wear through school, sport and everything in between.

24 karat gold is pure gold. It contains no copper, silver, or zinc alloys associated with contact dermatitis in sensitive skin. Aunix™ 24K applies that gold by electrodeposition onto the steel core. It is a plating process, and what sits underneath is a material we would be content to sell on its own.

Precision-engineered to reduce the risk of over-tightening and embedding while still holding securely. The notched post seats the butterfly at a set position rather than gripping by friction, so it is far less likely to work loose, and the scroll-style butterfly leaves the back of the lobe open for airflow and cleaning.

Most reactions in children come from nickel. It is found in the vast majority of fashion earrings, including many that call themselves hypoallergenic. purepixxi uses Aunix™ 24K, pure 24 karat gold applied onto a solid S316L Surgical Steel core. S316L contains nickel, as almost all surgical steels do, but it is chosen because it resists corrosion and holds onto it: nickel release measured under EN 1811 was not detected. The gold surface has no alloy in it at all.
Karat measures how much of an alloy is actually gold. 14K gold is only 58.3% gold, the rest is copper, silver, and other metals that are common causes of contact reactions. 18K is 75% gold. 24K is pure gold with no alloy mix at all. Lower karat gold is cheaper to produce but the metals used to fill the gap are exactly what make children’s ears turn red. purepixxi will not use anything lower than 24K.
Eventually, yes. All gold plating wears, and any brand telling you otherwise is selling you something. What matters is how long it takes and what is underneath when it does. Aunix™ 24K applies pure 24 karat gold by electrodeposition onto a solid S316L Surgical Steel core, so there is no soft base metal waiting to be exposed. When the finish does eventually wear, what she is wearing is the same S316L Surgical Steel we sell on its own. Everyday wear including showering and swimming is what these are built for.
Yes. S316L Surgical Steel resists corrosion in chlorinated and salt water and 24K gold is chemically inert in the same conditions. The notched post and scroll-style Butterfly Back are designed to hold through physical activity without the back migrating or embedding. purepixxi is built for real childhood, not just for special occasions.
The post has a precision notch that the Butterfly Back clicks into and holds against. It is far less likely to work loose than a standard butterfly back, which is held by friction alone. The scroll-style butterfly is shaped to give the exact amount of skin contact for comfort and cleanability, while keeping the back secure through swimming, PE and playgrounds. It releases with deliberate pressure, which means it stays on when it should and comes off when you want it to.
purepixxi earrings are designed for fully healed piercings. Most piercings require six to eight weeks to heal on the surface, though full healing takes longer. We recommend consulting your piercer before switching earrings. Once healed, 24K Pure Gold and S316L Surgical Steel are among the most biocompatible materials available and are well-suited to sensitive young skin.
Warm water and a small amount of mild soap is all you need, once a week, with the earrings out. Both surfaces are smooth and non-porous, so there is less for build-up to cling to than on a surface that has corroded or worn. Pat dry after cleaning. Avoid alcohol-based cleaners, which dry the skin lining the piercing channel. Weekly cleaning is sufficient for everyday wear.
If anything fails because of how the earring was made, purepixxi will replace it. That includes the gold finish, the post, and the Butterfly Back. It does not cover loss or deliberate damage.
