Gold plated earrings are only as safe for sensitive ears as the metal underneath the plating. While the layer is intact, her skin touches gold and usually nothing happens. Every layer wears through eventually, and after that she's wearing the base metal, which on most inexpensive jewelry is never named anywhere. That's the whole question. What plating actually is

A plated earring is a thin layer of gold applied over a different metal, usually by electroplating.

The layer can be extremely thin. There's no universal minimum a manufacturer has to meet before calling something gold plated, so the term covers everything from a substantial coating to a few atoms of color.

Related terms describe different amounts of the same idea. Gold filled is a thicker layer, fused under heat and pressure, and regulated in the United States at a minimum proportion of total weight. Vermeil is gold over sterling silver specifically, with a minimum thickness, so at least the base is a known quantity. PVD is a harder coating applied as a vapor in a vacuum chamber.

All four describe the surface. None of them describes the base metal.

The two-phase problem

Plated earrings behave differently at different points in their life, which is why parents find them confusing.

Phase one. The coating is intact. Skin touches gold, gold is unreactive, and nothing much happens. This phase can last months or a couple of years depending on thickness and wear.

Phase two. The coating has worn through at the points of most contact, usually the post and the back first. Now skin is against the base metal, and on inexpensive jewelry that's often brass, a zinc alloy, or something unnamed. Brass is mostly copper, which is what turns skin green.

The difficulty is that nothing announces the transition. There's no moment where the earring tells you it has changed. A pair that was fine in March can be causing trouble in October with no visible change to the front.

Why the delay makes it worse

There is a consequence to that timing that explains a pattern a lot of parents describe.

A reaction to a metal is rarely immediate. It builds with exposure, and it can take months or years to appear. A coating pushes that timeline further out still.

So by the time her ears react, she has usually worn several different pairs, and the ones that started it are long out of the picture. The pair responsible almost never gets identified. Nothing gets learned, and the same thing happens again with the next set.

Whether or not that's anyone's intention, it's the effect. It's also why "she wore those for ages and was fine" is weaker evidence than it feels.

How to tell the coating is going

You can see it if you know where to look, and the place to look isn't the front.

The post. If the front still looks gold but the post has gone a darker steel color, the coating on the post has worn through. That's the component sitting inside her piercing, against the inner surface of the hole where skin is thinner and more permeable than on the outside of the lobe.

The back. Backs are often given less finish than the front to begin with, so they frequently tarnish or change color earliest.

Patchy dullness. Wear concentrates at contact points rather than spreading evenly, so patchiness is the signature.

Marks on her skin. Green marks usually mean copper. Dark gray or black marks often mean abrasion or a reaction with soaps and cosmetics. Either way, the base metal is in contact.

The question nobody asks about backs

Backs are commonly generic components, bought in from a different supplier than the earrings themselves.

That has consequences worth knowing. The manufacturing conditions are unknown. The finish may not match the front, so a gold-colored back might be a coating over brass while the front is something else entirely. And where testing has been done, it may not have covered the back at all, because the back was never part of the sample.

So a brand can honestly say its earrings were tested, and that statement may not describe the component spending the most time against your daughter's lobe.

Ask directly: are the post and the back the same material as the front? A vague answer is an answer.

Why I stopped trusting coating claims

I have walked plating factories while sourcing, and it changed how I read every listing since.

I asked the same question at each one: what exactly do you mean by PVD? I got a different answer every time. Different source metals, different thicknesses, different definitions of what counted as PVD at all. Some of what I was shown was closer to a standard electroplate with better marketing attached.

These were factories running multiple brands off the same lines with very little quality control between them. Rails of jewelry hanging in open air to dry. Floors that were filthy and rusty. Workers with no gloves.

If the people applying the coating can't agree on what it is, the word on the finished listing carries no information at all by the time it reaches a mother in another country.

Most of the time this isn't a brand deciding to mislead anyone. It's a brand repeating a description it was given by a supplier who was repeating a description they were given, with nobody in the chain able to check.

So are gold plated earrings safe for sensitive ears?

Yes, with three conditions.

Know what's underneath. If the base metal is named and stable, plating is a finish rather than a disguise. If nobody will name it, you're buying a countdown.

Watch the post. When it changes color, stop wearing them. A worn coating can't be restored, and cleaning it harder removes more of it.

Jewelry on last, off first. Perfume, sunscreen, lotion and soap go on before the earrings, and the earrings come out before anything else comes off. Products applied over the top accelerate wear considerably.

Taking them out for swimming and at night both help too, mostly by reducing total contact time.

Questions parents ask next

How thick is the plating on purepixxi earrings? We don't publish a micron figure, because thickness numbers are used loosely across the category and are difficult to verify. What we publish instead is what the gold is, what the core is, and what the testing found.

Is thicker plating safer? It lasts longer, so it delays the point at which the base metal is exposed. It doesn't change what that base metal is.

Can plating be redone once it wears? Professionally, on pieces worth the cost. For inexpensive earrings it is rarely worth it, and it doesn't change the metal underneath.

Is gold filled a better choice than plated? It has a thicker layer that lasts longer, and it's regulated at a minimum proportion of weight. It's still a layer over something else, so the base metal question still applies.

She has worn plated earrings for years without a problem. Should I change anything? Check the posts. If they have changed color, the coating has gone and she has been wearing the base metal for some time without either of you knowing.
