What is PVD coating on earrings?

PVD is a coating sprayed over jewelry. Here is what PVD coating on earrings does, how long it lasts, and why what sits underneath matters more.

PVD stands for physical vapor deposition. It's a coating, applied as a vapor in a vacuum chamber, that bonds a thin layer of color to the metal underneath. On earrings it's used to make cheap base metal look like gold, and to slow down how fast that look wears off. It says nothing at all about what's under it, which is the part that touches your daughter's ear. Our materials page names ours exactly.

The short version

PVD is a finish, not a material. It's a layer on top. When a listing tells you a pair is "PVD gold" or "PVD coated", you've been told about the paint and nothing about the wall.

That distinction matters because skin doesn't react to the color of an earring. It reacts to what the metal releases into it. A coating changes what she can see. It doesn't change what's underneath once the coating goes.

What PVD coating on earrings actually is

The process itself is sound engineering. The piece goes into a vacuum chamber. A solid source material gets vaporized, usually with an electric arc or a beam, and the vapor settles onto the surface and bonds to it. The layer is extremely thin, measured in microns, and it's harder and more scratch-resistant than a traditional electroplate.

That's why you'll see it marketed as waterproof, hard-wearing, tarnish-proof. Those claims aren't lies. PVD really is tougher than what came before it.

The problem isn't the process. It's what the process is being used to hide.

Nobody could tell me what it meant

I've walked plating factories. When I was sourcing, I asked the same question at each one: what exactly do you mean by PVD?

I got a different answer every time. Different source metals. Different thicknesses. Different definitions of what counted as PVD at all. Some of what I was shown was closer to a standard electroplate with better marketing attached.

These were the factories supplying multiple brands off the same lines, with very little quality control between them. Rails and rails of jewelry hanging in open air to dry. Floors that were filthy and rusty. Workers with no gloves.

That inconsistency is what decided it for me. If the people applying the coating can't agree on what it is, the word on the finished product means nothing by the time it reaches you. You're not being told a specification. You're being told a word.

Why brands lean on it

The price of gold has risen sharply over the past several years. That raises what it costs to manufacture any piece of gold jewelry, and a brand facing that has two choices. It can raise its prices, or it can hold its prices and reduce what goes into the product.

Raising prices costs customers. So the reduction is the more common choice, and it happens in two places.

The visible one is karat. Drop from 18K to 14K to 12K to 9K. Nine karat is nine parts gold out of twenty-four. The rest is alloy, and alloys are where reactive metals live.

The less visible one is the core. Move away from a stable steel to a cheaper class of steel, or to a base metal that never gets named at all.

Then PVD goes over the top, and the economics of that are worth following, because they run backwards from how they look.

Applying PVD costs more than not applying it. It still saves money overall, because of what it permits underneath. Spend a little on the coating, save considerably more on the metal it covers. On a product page the two look identical.

The coating buys something else as well, and this is the part worth understanding. A reaction to a metal is rarely immediate. It builds with exposure and can take months or years to appear. A coating pushes that timeline further out. By the time her ears do react, she has worn several pairs, and the ones that started it are long out of the picture. Whether or not that's anyone's intention, it's the effect. The pair responsible almost never gets identified, so nobody learns anything and nothing changes.

In practical terms, it is a varnish over the jewelry. A good varnish. But once it wears through, her skin is against whatever the earring is actually made of, and nobody told you what that was.

How long does PVD last on earrings?

Longer than standard plating. Anywhere from months to a few years depending on thickness, how often she wears them, and what they're exposed to.

Sweat, water, sunscreen, friction against a pillow and the daily in-and-out all wear it. Children's earrings get more of all of that than adult ones do, because children sleep in them, swim in them, and handle them constantly.

No one can give you a reliable figure. A brand that offers one is estimating. The honest answer is that every coating wears through eventually. The only real question is what she's wearing once it has.

Where does gold vermeil fit into this?

Right alongside it, and it comes up constantly enough to answer here.

Gold vermeil is gold over sterling silver, with a minimum thickness. In the United States the FTC guidance is at least 2.5 microns of gold over a base of sterling silver. That makes it a step above ordinary gold plating on two counts: the layer is thicker than most plating, and the base metal underneath is named rather than anonymous.

It's the same shape of product as a PVD-coated piece though: a coating over a core, where the coating wears and the core is what she's left wearing.

So the vermeil question is the base metal question again. Sterling silver is 92.5 percent silver, and the remaining 7.5 percent is usually copper. Copper is what turns skin green and what tarnishes. So a vermeil earring is fine while the gold holds and becomes a silver-and-copper earring afterwards.

How long does gold vermeil last on earrings? The same answer as plating generally: months to a few years. The post goes first, because that's where the friction is.

Is gold vermeil hypoallergenic? The word means nothing in jewelry, and vermeil is no exception. It does at least have a named base, which is more than most plated jewelry offers, and that base still contains copper.

Is PVD safe for sensitive ears?

While it's intact, a PVD layer does sit between skin and the metal below.

But "while it's intact" is doing all the work in that sentence, and it isn't a safety standard. It's a countdown.

Nickel allergy affects around one in five people in North America, and the American Academy of Pediatrics reported in 2020 that pediatric nickel allergic contact dermatitis has nearly quadrupled over three decades, with at least 1.1 million US children already sensitized. Sensitization builds through exposure over time, and it's generally permanent once it happens. So the metal she's exposed to in year two of owning a pair matters as much as year one.

A coating can't answer that question. Only the material underneath can.

If her ears are already reacting, that's worth understanding properly rather than guessing at. It's also worth saying: if an ear looks infected rather than irritated, that's one for your pediatrician, not for a jewelry blog.

What purepixxi does instead

We don't use PVD.

That second one is a gold-plating process and we say so. Describing it any other way would be the same evasion in different words. The difference isn't that it isn't plated. The difference is what we plate, and what we plate it onto. All gold plating is only as safe as the metal underneath. Ours is pure 24 karat gold over surgical steel, not thin low-karat gold over a base metal nobody will name.

The standard runs all the way down. The setting, the post and the butterfly back all have the same S316L Surgical Steel core, because the back sits against her ear for exactly as long as the front does. Most brands can't tell you what their backs are made of.

And it's independently tested. When I sent pieces to SGS, I picked the ones with the largest surface area touching an ear, and they tested the setting, the post and the butterfly back. Eight pairs, all of them. Nickel release wasn't detected under EN 1811. Tested to ASTM F2923 and CPSIA, with lead below a tenth of the US legal limit. Questions parents ask next

Is PVD better than gold plating? As a coating, generally yes. It's harder and lasts longer. That's a comparison between two coatings though, and it still tells you nothing about the metal beneath either one.

Can you tell if earrings are PVD coated just by looking? Not reliably when they're new. That's largely the intention. It usually shows once wear starts, as dulling or a color change at the points of most contact, often around the post.

Does PVD contain nickel? It can. The coating itself may include nickel depending on the source material, and the base metal beneath very often does. Neither is usually disclosed.

What should I look for on a product page instead? A named material with a grade attached, what the posts and backs are made of, and a named test with a named result. If a listing tells you the color and not the metal, that's your answer.

Does a coating wearing off mean the earrings were bad quality? Not necessarily. Every coating wears. The question worth asking before you buy is what's revealed when it does.
