Do gold earrings contain nickel?

Many gold earrings do contain nickel, and the karat tells you how much room there is for it. Here is how to work out what is actually in a pair.

Many gold earrings do contain nickel, and you usually can't tell from the listing. Pure 24 karat gold contains none, because there's nothing in it but gold. Every karat below that is part gold and part other metal, and nickel is one of the metals commonly used in that remainder. White gold is the most likely to contain it. Why gold gets mixed with anything at all

Pure gold is soft. Softer than most people expect, soft enough to mark with a fingernail at full purity.

For most jewelry that's a problem, so gold gets alloyed with other metals to harden it, to change its color and to bring the cost down. Copper, zinc, silver, palladium and nickel all appear in different recipes.

The karat number tells you the ratio. Picture the metal divided into 24 parts, and the karat is how many of those parts are gold. 18 karat is 18 parts gold and 6 parts other metal. 9 karat is 9 parts gold and 15 parts other metal.

What it doesn't tell you is which other metals, or in what proportion. That's the manufacturer's recipe, and there's no requirement to publish it.

Which gold earrings contain nickel, and where

White gold is the highest-risk version, and the reason is the color. Gold is yellow, so making it white means adding something that bleaches it. Nickel does that cheaply and effectively. Palladium does it too and costs considerably more, so nickel has historically been the common choice. If a pair is white gold and nobody will tell you what whitened it, treat that as unanswered rather than answered.

Rose gold gets its color from copper. That's not nickel, but copper is what turns skin green, so it brings its own issue.

Yellow gold at lower karats is a mixed bag. The alloy is usually copper and silver, sometimes with zinc, and sometimes with nickel. It varies by manufacturer and it's rarely stated.

Gold plated is a separate question entirely, and often the more important one. The gold is a layer. Underneath it is a base metal that's frequently nickel-bearing, and once the layer wears through, that base metal is what's against her skin.

Presence and release aren't the same thing

This is the distinction that changes how you read every claim in the category.

Whether nickel is present in an alloy is a question about composition. Whether nickel is released from that alloy into skin is a question about behavior, and only the second one has any bearing on her ears.

Nickel bound tightly inside a stable metal structure can release almost nothing. Nickel in an unstable alloy releases considerably more. The same element, very different outcomes.

That's why "nickel-free" is a weaker claim than it sounds. It's a statement about composition, usually untested, and often covering only the part somebody thought about.

The measurement that replaces it is EN 1811, a European standard that simulates a week of skin contact in artificial sweat and measures what actually comes out. A result under EN 1811 is a number from a defined test rather than a sentence somebody wrote.

Why this matters more than it used to

Nickel allergy affects around one in five people in North America. The American Academy of Pediatrics reported in 2020 that nickel allergic contact dermatitis in children has nearly quadrupled over three decades, with at least 1.1 million children in the United States already sensitized.

Girls carry most of that burden, largely because they're pierced earlier and wear earrings longer. A 2025 systematic review found people with piercings were nearly six times more likely to be nickel allergic.

Sensitization is cumulative and generally permanent. The immune system doesn't react on first contact. It reacts once it's been exposed enough, over enough time, to learn the metal. Which means the everyday earrings worn through childhood matter more than any single special pair.

How to find out what's actually in a pair

Five questions, and any brand that can answer them is telling you something real.

  1. What karat, and what's the rest of it? The karat is usually stated. The remainder rarely is, so ask.
  2. If it's white gold, what whitens it? Nickel or palladium. There isn't a third common answer.
  3. If it's plated, what's the base metal? This is the one that decides what happens in year two.
  4. Are the post and the back the same material as the front? Backs are commonly bought in from a different supplier, so a claim about the earring may not cover them.
  5. Has it been tested for nickel release, by whom, and what was the result? "Tested" isn't a result. "Not detected under EN 1811" is.

What we do

Questions parents ask next

Is there such a thing as genuinely nickel-free gold jewelry? Yes. 24 karat gold has no alloy content at all. Some 18 karat is alloyed with palladium rather than nickel. The difficulty is verifying it, because the recipe usually isn't published.

How much nickel does it take to cause a reaction? It varies enormously between individuals and depends on how long the contact lasts. That's why release over time, rather than a single threshold, is what the testing measures.

Can she wear gold if she's already reacted to it? That depends on what she reacted to, which was more likely the alloy than the gold. A doctor can arrange patch testing, which identifies the specific metal and turns guesswork into a rule she can use for life.

Does a hallmark tell me about nickel? No. A hallmark certifies the gold content. It says nothing about the composition of the remainder.

Are more expensive gold earrings less likely to contain nickel? Not reliably. Higher karat means less alloy overall, so there's less room for anything. But price reflects design and brand too, so it's a poor proxy on its own.
