Titanium made to ASTM F136, because it contains no nickel at all, with niobium and platinum close behind for the same reason. After those come pure 24 karat gold and a well-made S316L Surgical Steel, which both contain or release very little. The metals that cause most of the trouble are the ones people assume are safe: low karat gold, sterling silver, and anything plated over a base alloy. The ranking only makes sense once you know what's being ranked, which isn't the metal's value.

What "irritating" actually means

Two different things get called irritation, and they have different causes.

Allergic contact dermatitis is an immune response. The skin has been sensitized to a metal, usually nickel, and reacts on contact. It looks like redness, itching, small blisters and sometimes weeping, and it appears hours to days after contact rather than immediately.

Simple irritation is mechanical or chemical rather than immune. Friction from a back done up too tight, trapped soap, a rough finish, a heavy earring pulling on the lobe.

Metal choice mostly addresses the first. Nickel is the most common contact allergen in the developed world, and it's in most jewelry alloys, which is why it dominates the conversation.

The number that matters isn't how much nickel a metal contains. It's how much escapes onto skin. EN 1811 measures exactly that, in micrograms per square centimeter per week, with a legal limit of 0.5 for prolonged contact and 0.2 for a post in a pierced ear.

Why low karat gold surprises people

Gold sounds like the safe answer, and for a lot of parents it's the upgrade they buy after a bad experience. The karat number is what decides whether that upgrade works.

Karat measures how much of the metal is gold. 24 karat is pure. 18 karat is 75% gold and 25% something else. 14 karat is about 58% gold and 42% something else. That remainder is an alloy of copper, silver, zinc and often nickel, added for hardness and color.

So a 14 karat earring is mostly not gold. The gold is the part that doesn't react. The 42% is the part that might.

Rose gold is copper. The pink color comes from a higher copper content, which is also the metal that produces green staining on skin.

White gold is the one to watch. It's traditionally whitened with nickel, and then usually rhodium plated. While the rhodium holds, contact is with rhodium. When it wears, contact is with the nickel-bearing alloy underneath.

Where the ranking stops helping

A metal's position on that table is a starting point, not a verdict on a particular earring.

Plating changes everything. A gold plated earring behaves like gold until the plating wears through, then behaves like whatever is underneath. Wear starts at the post and the butterfly back, where friction is highest, and the front stays looking perfect throughout.

Certification is patchy. Titanium is only reliably nickel free if it's actually made to F136 or F67 with paperwork behind it. Uncertified titanium is common and its composition isn't guaranteed.

Nickel isn't the only allergen. Cobalt and chromium also cause contact reactions, though far less often.

And she's an individual. A metal that suits most children may not suit yours. If there's a pattern of reactions, that's a conversation with your pediatrician and possibly a patch test, which is how sensitization is actually established.

How to choose without a chemistry degree

Ask for the alloy designation. 316L, Ti-6Al-4V ELI, 24 karat. A grade rather than an adjective.

Ask what the nickel release measured. An EN 1811 figure. "Nickel free" and "hypoallergenic" are claims rather than measurements.

Ask what the post and back are made of. Not the front. The front is the part that gets described.

Prefer one material throughout over a coating, for anything worn daily. Fewer layers, fewer ways for the answer to change over time.

At 24 karat there's no alloy in the gold, so there's no copper and no nickel in the surface. It's a gold-plating process and we say so. The difference is what we plate, and what we plate it onto.

We don't make rose gold, because the color is copper. We don't make 14 karat, because the majority of it wouldn't be gold.

Independently tested by SGS. Nickel release under EN 1811: not detected. Tested to ASTM F2923, CPSIA and BSEN 71-3, with lead below a tenth of the United States legal limit. Report BTO 341803/1, and you can ask me for it.

If your daughter has a diagnosed nickel allergy and you want the metal with none present at all, buy titanium made to ASTM F136 from a reputable piercer. That's the honest answer, and it isn't us.

Questions parents ask next

Is silver a safe choice? Sterling silver is 92.5% silver and 7.5% other metal, usually copper. It's rarely the worst option and rarely the best, and it tarnishes, which is the surface reacting.

Is titanium worth the extra cost? For a fresh piercing or a diagnosed nickel allergy, yes. For a healed ear with no known allergy, a steel with a published release figure is doing the same job.

What about plastic or acrylic? They avoid metal, which sounds like the answer. They're softer and more porous, they hold onto residue, and the retainer types sold for this are usually meant for short term use rather than daily wear.

Does 24 karat gold scratch easily? Pure gold is soft, which is why it's used as a surface over a harder core rather than as the whole earring in something worn every day.

She reacts to everything. What now? See your pediatrician and ask about patch testing. Knowing which metal she's sensitized to turns guesswork into a shopping rule.
