The higher the karat, the better it suits sensitive ears. 24 karat is pure gold with no alloy in it at all, so there's nothing present to react with skin. Every karat below that is part gold and part other metal, and it's the other metal that causes reactions. Our 24K Pure Gold collection is finished in pure 24 karat gold for that reason.

What karat actually measures

Karat measures purity. It says nothing about quality, size, weight or value, which is where most of the confusion starts.

Picture the metal divided into 24 equal parts. The karat number is how many of those parts are gold. Everything left over is other metal.

So 24 karat is all 24 parts gold. 18 karat is 18 parts gold and 6 parts something else. 9 karat is 9 parts gold and 15 parts something else, which means more than half of a 9 karat earring isn't gold.

In plain terms: 22 karat is nearly all gold, 18 karat is about three quarters, 14 karat is a little over half, 10 karat is under half, and 9 karat is about a third.

The last column is the part that matters, and we will come back to it.

Why gold gets mixed with anything

Pure gold is soft. Soft enough to mark with a fingernail, which for a ring or a bracelet is a genuine problem.

Alloying hardens it. It also changes the color and reduces the cost, and both of those became reasons in their own right. Copper, silver, zinc, palladium and nickel all appear in different recipes depending on the color and hardness a manufacturer wants.

For an earring, hardness matters far less than it does for a ring. A stud isn't being knocked against desks and door handles. It sits in a lobe. So the trade-off that justifies alloying elsewhere carries much less weight here.

Why the alloy is what reacts, not the gold

Gold is one of the least reactive metals there is. It's used in dentistry and in electronics precisely because it doesn't corrode. Left against skin, pure gold does very little.

The metals mixed into it behave differently.

Copper reacts with moisture and the mild acids in perspiration, forming green compounds that transfer onto skin. It's also what makes rose gold pink, so rose gold can't exist without it.

Nickel is the most common cause of metal allergy by a wide margin. It is cheap, it hardens gold, and it whitens it, which is why white gold is the karat gold most likely to contain it.

Silver and zinc are less commonly implicated but both tarnish, and tarnishing is a surface reaction that happens against skin as readily as it happens in a drawer.

So when someone says a gold earring caused a reaction, the gold is almost never the culprit. Something in the remaining parts was.

The problem with the last column

Here is the thing that makes karat harder to use than it should be.

A stamp tells you how much of the metal is gold. It never tells you what the rest is. Nobody is obliged to name it, and almost nobody does.

That means two earrings both stamped 9K can contain quite different recipes and behave quite differently on the same ear. The stamp is identical. The behavior isn't.

It also means karat is a proxy rather than an answer. A high karat is better because there is less room for anything problematic, not because you've been told there's nothing problematic in it.

Which karat gold is best for sensitive ears, karat by karat

24 karat. No alloy content, so nothing present to react. The trade-off is softness, which is why it's used as a finish over a stronger core rather than as a whole earring.

22 karat. Two parts in 24 are other metal. Common in some markets, uncommon in Western children's jewelry.

18 karat. Six parts in 24, so a quarter of the metal is something else. Better than lower karats and still a meaningful amount of unnamed alloy.

14 karat. Ten parts in 24. Very common in the United States, and this is where the alloy content starts to dominate the behavior of the piece.

10 karat and 9 karat. More than half the metal isn't gold. At this point the earring behaves mostly like its alloy, and the alloy is undisclosed.

Plated gold, any karat. A different question entirely. The karat describes the layer, not the item. Underneath is a base metal that's usually unnamed, and every coating wears through eventually.

Color changes the answer

The color of gold jewelry is produced by the alloy, which means the color tells you something about what's in there.

Yellow gold is usually alloyed with copper and silver, sometimes with zinc. Nickel appears in some recipes and not others.

White gold is yellow gold with something added to bleach it. Nickel does that cheaply. Palladium does it too and costs considerably more, so nickel has historically been the common choice. If a piece is white gold and nobody will say what whitened it, that is unanswered rather than answered.

Rose gold is colored by copper, and the more copper, the pinker it is. There's no such thing as pure rose gold, because the color is the copper.

For sensitive ears, that ranking is fairly consistent: yellow at high karat is the least likely to cause trouble, rose brings copper, and white brings the highest chance of nickel.

Why the market moved down rather than up

There's a commercial story behind the karat you see on shelves, and it explains a lot.

The price of gold has risen sharply over the past five years, roughly two and a half times. That increases what it costs to make any piece of gold jewelry, and a brand facing that increase has two choices. Raise prices, or hold prices and reduce what goes into the product.

Raising prices costs customers. So the reduction is the more common route, and it happens in two places. The visible one is karat, dropping from 18 to 14 to 9, which is at least stamped on the piece. The less visible one is the core underneath a plated finish, which isn't described anywhere.

I went the other way. My previous jewelry brand ran 18 karat when gold was around $1,800 an ounce, because 18 karat was the most universally accepted choice. purepixxi runs 24 karat now, with gold near $4,400. I increased the gold content while the price of gold multiplied, at exactly the point most of the category was quietly reducing it.

That decision costs money on every pair, and it's the honest answer to why we aren't the cheapest option.

What to ask before you buy

What karat, and what's the remaining alloy? The karat is usually stated. The remainder rarely is.

If it's white gold, what whitens it? Nickel or palladium. There isn't a third common answer.

If it is plated, what is the base metal? This decides what she's wearing in year two.

Are the post and the back the same material as the front? Backs are frequently bought in from a different supplier than the earrings, so a claim about the earring may not cover them.

Has it been tested for nickel release, by whom, and what was the result? "Tested" isn't a result. "Not detected under EN 1811" is.

Why release matters more than karat alone

Karat tells you how much room there is for a problem. Testing tells you whether there is one.

The distinction is between a metal being present in an alloy and a metal being released from it into skin. Only the second has any bearing on her ears. Nickel bound tightly inside a stable structure releases almost nothing. Nickel in an unstable alloy releases considerably more.

EN 1811 is the European standard that measures exactly that. It simulates a week of skin contact in artificial sweat and measures what comes out. A result under EN 1811 is a number from a defined test, which is a different category of thing from a stamp.

This matters because nickel allergy affects around one in five people in North America, and the American Academy of Pediatrics reported in 2020 that nickel allergic contact dermatitis in children has nearly quadrupled over three decades, with at least 1.1 million children in the United States already sensitized. Sensitization builds through exposure and is generally permanent, so the everyday earring worn through childhood matters more than any single special pair.

What we do

24K Pure Gold, which is pure 24 karat gold finished onto a solid S316L Surgical Steel core with Aunix™ 24K, our engineered gold finish. It's a gold-plating process and we say so. The difference isn't the absence of plating. It's that the gold is pure 24 karat rather than a low-karat alloy, and the core beneath it is surgical steel rather than a base metal nobody will name.

That combination is the direct answer to this article. The finish has no alloy in it, so there's nothing in the gold to react. And when any finish eventually shows wear, what's underneath is a material we would have been content to sell on its own.

The setting, the post and the butterfly back all carry that same core. Independently tested by SGS to ASTM F2923 and CPSIA, with nickel release not detected under EN 1811, and lead below a tenth of the United States legal limit. Report BTO 341803/1, and you can ask me for it.

Questions parents ask next

Is 24 karat too soft for a child's earring? As a whole earring, yes, which is why it's used as a finish over a stronger core rather than on its own. The softness argument is about structure, not about skin.

Is 14 karat safe for most children? Many children wear 14 karat without any trouble. The point is that you can't tell in advance, because the ten parts that aren't gold are undisclosed.

She reacted to a gold pair. Does that mean she's allergic to gold? Probably not. Gold allergy exists and is comparatively rare. A reaction to a gold-colored earring is much more likely to be the alloy or, on plated pieces, the base metal underneath.

Does a hallmark tell me anything about the alloy? No. A hallmark certifies gold content only. It says nothing about the composition of the remainder.

Is higher karat always more expensive? Generally yes, because there's more gold in it. Price also reflects design and brand, so it is a poor guide to material on its own.

What about gold filled or vermeil? Both are layers over something else, thicker than standard plating. They last longer and they still don't describe the base metal.
