How long gold plating lasts on earrings ranges from a few months to a few years. It depends on how thick the layer is, how often they're worn, and what they're exposed to. Nobody can give you a reliable figure, and a brand that offers one is estimating. The more useful question is what she's wearing once the plating has gone, and our 24K Pure Gold collection answers that one differently.
How long gold plating lasts, and why there's no straight answer
Plating thickness isn't standardized. There's no minimum a manufacturer has to meet before calling something gold plated, and the layer can range from a fraction of a micron to several microns depending on what the piece cost to make.
That alone produces an enormous spread. But even two identically plated pairs wear at different rates, because wear is about use rather than time.
Children's earrings get more use than adult ones. They're slept in, swum in, showered in, and handled constantly by hands that aren't gentle. A pair worn daily by a nine year old is doing far more work than the same pair in an adult's jewelry box.
What actually wears it
Friction. The largest factor by far. The post rubbing inside the piercing channel, the back sliding on and off, the front catching on hair, collars and pillows. Wear concentrates at contact points, which is why the post and the back go first while the front still looks fine.
Moisture. Water sitting against the metal after swimming, bathing or showering. Not the swimming itself so much as what's left behind.
Perspiration. Mildly acidic, and it's in contact for hours at a time.
Products. Perfume, hairspray, sunscreen, lotion, shampoo and soap all end up on the lobe. Applying them over the earrings, rather than before, accelerates everything.
Sleeping in them, which turns a few hours of contact into a continuous eight.
How to tell it's wearing through
You can see it, once you know what you're looking at.
Dullness. The even brightness goes first. A plated surface that's starting to wear loses its consistency before it loses its color.
Patchy areas. Wear shows in patches at the points of most contact, rather than uniformly.
A post that's a different color from the front. This is the clearest signal. If the front still looks gold but the post has gone a darker steel color, the plating on the post has worn through, and that's the component sitting inside her piercing.
A back that's tarnishing. Backs often get less finish than the front to begin with, so they frequently show it earliest.
Green or dark gray marks on her skin. At this stage the base metal is in contact and reacting. This isn't a warning that it might wear through. It's confirmation that it has.
What happens next is the actual issue
The plating isn't the point. What's underneath it is.
A gold plated earring is a layer of gold over a base metal, and on inexpensive jewelry that base is frequently brass, a zinc alloy, or something unnamed. None of it is usually described anywhere on the listing.
While the layer holds, skin touches gold and nothing much happens. Once it's gone, skin is against whatever the manufacturer actually used, and neither you nor often the seller knows what that is.
There's a consequence to that timing which is worth understanding, because it explains a pattern parents find baffling.
A reaction to a metal is rarely immediate. It builds with exposure, and it can take months or years to show. A coating pushes that timeline further out still. So by the time her ears do react, she has usually worn several different pairs, and the ones that started it are long out of the picture. The pair responsible almost never gets identified, so nothing gets learned and the same thing happens again with the next set.
I'd describe a coating honestly as a varnish over the jewelry. Often a good varnish. But a varnish is a delay, not a solution.
Is PVD different?
Somewhat. PVD, physical vapor deposition, is applied as a vapor in a vacuum chamber and produces a harder, more scratch-resistant layer than standard electroplating. Marketed as waterproof and hard-wearing, and those claims are broadly fair.
It's still a coating. It still wears through. And it still tells you nothing about the metal beneath it.
There's a cost logic behind it that runs backwards from how it looks. Applying PVD costs more than not applying it, and it still saves money overall, because of what it permits underneath. Spend a little on the coating, save considerably more on the metal it covers.
How to make a plated pair last longer
If she has plated earrings she loves, these genuinely help.
Jewelry on last, off first. Perfume, sunscreen, lotion and soap go on before the earrings. The earrings come out before anything else comes off.
Take them out for swimming, and dry the lobe properly afterwards.
Take them out at night, which roughly halves the daily contact time.
Don't clean them abrasively. Polishing cloths and scrubbing remove plating faster than wear does. A soft dry cloth is enough.
Rotate pairs so no single pair takes every day.
And the rule that matters most: when the post changes color, stop wearing them. A worn coating can't be restored, and that's the point at which the earring starts working against her rather than for her.

Questions parents ask next
Can gold plating be redone? Professionally, yes, for pieces worth the cost of replating. For inexpensive earrings it's rarely worth it, and it doesn't change the base metal underneath.
Is thicker plating always better? It lasts longer, so it delays the problem for longer. It doesn't change what's under it.
How is gold filled different? Gold filled uses a considerably thicker layer, fused under heat and pressure, and it's regulated in the United States at a minimum proportion of total weight. It lasts longer than plating. It's still a layer over something else.
Why does the post wear faster than the front? Because it's in constant friction inside the piercing, where the front is only rubbing against hair and clothing occasionally. It's also the component in the most sensitive position.
Does she need to stop wearing them the moment it dulls? Dulling on its own isn't urgent. A color change on the post, or marks appearing on her skin, is the point to stop.
