Does nickel free actually mean nickel free?

Nickel free means a claim about composition, not about what reaches skin. Here is why release is the measurement that matters, and how to check it.

Often not, and what nickel free means is not what most people take it to mean. "Nickel free" is a claim about what's in the alloy. What affects your daughter's skin is how much metal actually leaves the item and gets into her, which is a different measurement with a different answer. There's no requirement to test before making the claim. Our materials page publishes the measurement instead.

Three ways nickel free can be true and still not help

It's true about the earring and not the back. Backs and posts are frequently bought in from a different supplier than the earrings themselves. A brand can accurately describe its earrings as nickel free while the butterfly back came from somewhere else entirely and was never examined. That back sits against the lobe for exactly as long as the front does, and the post sits inside the piercing channel where skin is thinner and more permeable.

It's true about the coating and not the base. On a plated piece, the surface may be genuinely nickel free while the metal underneath isn't. Every coating wears through, first at the post where friction concentrates. Then the base metal is what's in contact, and it was never described.

It's true and untested. Nobody has to substantiate it. A brand can repeat what a supplier told them, who repeated what a factory told them, with nobody in the chain in a position to verify it.

None of that requires anyone to be lying. It only requires the information to have thinned out on its way down a supply chain, which is the normal state of affairs.

What nickel free means against what release means

This is the distinction that reframes everything, and almost no product page explains it.

Presence asks what elements are in the alloy. It's answered by composition, and it's what "nickel free" is claiming.

Release asks how much of an element actually leaves the metal and enters skin during wear. It's answered by testing.

Only the second one affects her ears. Skin doesn't respond to a specification. It responds to what reaches it.

And the gap between them is large. Nickel bound tightly inside a stable metal structure can release almost nothing measurable. The same element in an unstable alloy, or in a piece that's corroding, releases considerably more.

So a stable steel containing 12 percent nickel can genuinely be a better choice for sensitive ears than a piece marketed as nickel free whose composition nobody has verified.

The test that answers it properly

EN 1811 is the European standard, and it's a good one.

An item is immersed in artificial sweat at body temperature for a week, simulating prolonged skin contact. The solution is then analyzed for how much nickel came out.

The European Union sets a limit on nickel release for items in prolonged skin contact, and a stricter one for items inserted into pierced ears, because a piercing channel is a more permeable environment than the outside of the skin.

A result of "not detected" means the amount released fell below the analytical detection threshold. That's a measurement, on a specific product, by a specific laboratory. It's a different category of statement from an adjective.

Where the US differs, and why it matters

The United States has no legal limit on how much nickel an earring may release.

The European Union introduced one in 1994 and tightened it in 2004. Denmark restricted nickel release in 1992, and nickel allergy among Danish children fell from 24.8 percent to 9.2 percent between 1985 and 1998.

So in the US, "nickel free" carries no regulatory weight at all. There's no threshold it has to meet, no test it has to pass, and no body checking. The responsibility sits with the person buying.

That's not a reason for alarm. It's a reason to ask for a measurement rather than accept a phrase.

Why nickel specifically

Because it's the most common cause of metal allergy by a wide margin.

Nickel allergy affects around one in five people in North America. The American Academy of Pediatrics reported in 2020 that nickel allergic contact dermatitis in children has nearly quadrupled over three decades, with at least 1.1 million children in the United States already sensitized.

Girls carry most of that burden, and the reason is exposure rather than biology. They're pierced earlier, wear earrings longer, and change them more often. A 2025 systematic review found people with piercings were nearly six times more likely to be nickel allergic, and estimated that roughly 82 percent of nickel allergy in the general population is attributable to piercing.

Sensitization is cumulative and generally permanent. The immune system reacts once it's been exposed enough, over enough time, to learn the metal.

Is there such a thing as genuinely nickel-free jewelry?

Yes, and it's more specific than the phrase suggests.

Pure 24 karat gold has no alloy content at all, so there's nothing else in it.

Implant-grade titanium contains no nickel.

Niobium is inert and nickel free, and it's uncommon in children's designs.

Specialist nickel-free stainless steels exist, usually using manganese and nitrogen in place of nickel. They're rare in jewelry and considerably more expensive.

What's usually being sold as nickel free is none of those. It's ordinary jewelry with an unverified claim attached.

Where nickel hides

White gold. Gold is yellow, so whitening it means adding something. Nickel does that cheaply. Palladium does it too and costs considerably more, so nickel has historically been the common choice. If a piece is white gold and nobody will say what whitened it, treat that as unanswered.

Low-karat gold generally. 9 karat is 9 parts gold in 24, and what the other 15 parts contain is the manufacturer's recipe.

Base metals under plating. Brass, zinc alloys and unnamed mixes, frequently nickel-bearing and almost never described.

Backs and posts, for the reason above.

The five questions

  1. Nickel free according to what test? If there isn't one, it's a statement of belief.
  2. Does the claim cover the post and the back? Ask directly. A vague answer is an answer.
  3. If it's plated, what's the base metal? That decides what she's wearing in year two.
  4. Has nickel release been measured under EN 1811, and what was the result?
  5. Who performed the test? A named laboratory means a third party checked. Self-certification means the brand tested itself.

A seller who can answer those is telling you something real, whether or not their product contains nickel.

What we say instead

purepixxi doesn't describe its earrings as nickel free, and the reason is this article.

S316L Surgical Steel contains nickel. Roughly 10 to 14 percent, as almost all austenitic stainless steels do, because nickel is what stabilizes that structure and gives the steel its corrosion resistance. Claiming otherwise would be exactly the kind of statement this article warns about.

What we can give you is the measurement. Nickel release: not detected under EN 1811.

Questions parents ask next

If it contains nickel, can she still wear it? Many people who are nickel sensitive wear well-specified steel without difficulty, because release is very low. Sensitivity varies between individuals, so a wear trial with a return policy behind it is the sensible way to find out.

Is "nickel safe" different from "nickel free"? Slightly more honest in wording, equally undefined in practice. Neither is a regulated term.

Do home nickel test kits work? They detect nickel release from an object using a chemical spot test. They're a rough screen for jewelry you already own, and they test the item rather than the child, so they can't tell you whether she's sensitized.

Why do some countries regulate this and the US doesn't? The EU legislated on nickel release specifically because of the scale of the allergy. The US has federal limits on lead and cadmium in children's products through CPSIA, and no equivalent nickel release limit.

Should I just buy the most expensive option? No. Price tracks design, brand and precious metal content rather than nickel content. A costly white gold piece can release more than an inexpensive well-specified steel one.
