Why this is a bigger decision than it looks
An earring is unusual among the things a child owns.
She's pierced at five or six, and from then on she wears metal in her body more or less continuously, through school, sport, sleep and swimming, into adulthood. It isn't a medical device. But the duration of contact is closer to an implant than to anything else she puts on, and that's what makes the grade of metal worth arguing about.
Clothes come off. Toys get outgrown. An earring stays in.
That's the reason a decision that feels small deserves five minutes of checking.
The five things that make earrings the safest for kids
1. A named metal, with a grade
"Stainless steel" is a family of hundreds of alloys with quite different behavior against skin. S316L Surgical Steel is a specific grade, chosen for medical instruments and implants because it resists corrosion and therefore releases very little.
"Gold" is similarly broad. Picture the metal divided into 24 parts: the karat number is how many are gold. 9 karat is 9 parts gold and 15 parts undisclosed alloy. Pure 24 karat gold has no alloy at all.
The grade or the karat is the information. The category name isn't.
2. The post and the back, confirmed
Backs are commonly generic components, bought in from a different supplier than the earrings themselves. So a brand can accurately describe an earring while the back is something else entirely, frequently an unnamed base metal with a coating.
The back sits against the lobe for as long as the front does. The post sits inside the piercing channel, where skin is thinner, warmer and more permeable than on the outside.
Ask directly. A vague answer is an answer.
3. A test, a result and a laboratory
ASTM F2923 is the US safety specification for children's jewelry. It covers lead, cadmium, nickel, small parts that could be swallowed, sharp points and edges, and fastener strength. It's written specifically for products intended for children twelve and under.
CPSIA is federal law rather than a voluntary standard, setting legal limits on lead in children's products.
EN 1811 measures nickel release during prolonged skin contact.
"Tested" isn't a result. "Nickel release: not detected under EN 1811" is. And a named laboratory means a third party checked, where self-certification means the brand tested itself.
4. Physical safety, which is separate from material safety
Small parts. ASTM F2923 covers this because a loose stone or a detached back is a choking hazard for a young child or a younger sibling.
Sharp edges and points. A stone set proud of its setting catches on things, and every catch tugs the piercing.
Weight. A pair of 4mm studs should weigh about as much as a paperclip. Weight pulls downward on a soft lobe all day.
Fastener security. A back that works loose gets lost, and a lost back means either a missing earring or an unsuitable replacement.
5. A back that seats rather than grips
The rule almost every parent gets backwards: a back should sit firmly, not tightly.
Pushing it hard onto the post doesn't make the earring more secure. It compresses the lobe, restricts blood flow, and is the most common cause of sore ears in children. In the worst cases, swelling closes around a back and it becomes embedded, which needs a doctor.
There should be a small gap between back and ear. If there's an indentation in the lobe when the earring comes out, it was too far on.
A post with proper notches solves this structurally, because the back stops at a defined position instead of being pushed as far as it'll go.

Why nickel keeps coming up
Because it's the most common cause of metal allergy by a wide margin, and because children are the group where the exposure starts.
Nickel allergy affects around one in five people in North America. The American Academy of Pediatrics reported in 2020 that nickel allergic contact dermatitis in children has nearly quadrupled over three decades, with at least 1.1 million children in the United States already sensitized. A 2025 systematic review found people with piercings were nearly six times more likely to be nickel allergic.
Sensitization is cumulative and generally permanent. The immune system reacts once it's been exposed enough, over enough time, to learn the metal.
That's why the everyday earring matters more than the special one. Most of her total lifetime exposure comes from whatever she wears without thinking about it.
Worth knowing: the United States has no legal limit on how much nickel an earring may release. The EU introduced one in 1994 and tightened it in 2004. Denmark restricted it in 1992, and nickel allergy among Danish children fell from 24.8 percent to 9.2 percent between 1985 and 1998.
What to ignore
"Hypoallergenic." Not regulated in jewelry, no test required, no definition behind it.
"Nickel-free." A claim about composition rather than release, usually untested.
"Kid-safe" and "gentle." Marketing words with no standard behind them.
Price. It tracks design, brand and precious metal content rather than material safety.
Multipacks of mixed-material earrings. Generous gifts, and the fastest route to a reaction nobody can trace, because a child works through five or six pairs of unknown composition in a fortnight.
The 60-second listing check
- Search the page for a number attached to a metal. S316L, 24K, 925. No numbers means the page is describing appearance.
- Look for the words post and back. If neither appears, the description covers the visible part only.
- Look for a laboratory name. "Tested" without a tester is a claim about intent.
- Check for ASTM F2923. It's the children's-specific standard, and it covers physical hazards as well as materials.
- Read the returns terms. For a first purchase from a brand you don't know, that determines whether you can afford to be wrong.
Failing all five doesn't mean the earrings are unsafe. It means you can't tell, and you'd be finding out on her ears.
What changes as she gets older
The specification does not change much. What changes is who is managing it.
Around five to seven, you are putting the earrings in and taking them out, and the risk to watch is a back pushed on too far, usually by an adult being careful about not losing one.
Around eight to ten, she starts handling them herself. Now the risk shifts. Children push backs on hard because losing an earring feels like the bigger failure, and that is exactly the behavior that leads to a compressed lobe. This is the age to teach the rule out loud: firm, not tight, and there should be a small gap.
Around eleven and up, she is choosing pairs herself, often inexpensive ones from wherever her friends shop. This is when unknown materials enter the rotation in quantity, and it is also when sebum production increases, so build-up and smell become more noticeable.
The practical response to all three stages is the same. Keep the everyday pair a known, tested material, and treat whatever else arrives as occasional wear.
What to do with the earrings she already has
Most families have a drawer of accumulated pairs of unknown origin, and throwing them all away is neither necessary nor realistic.
Sort by what you can identify. Anything with a stated grade or karat goes in one pile. Everything else in another.
Check the posts on the unknown pile. A post that has gone a darker color than the front means a coating has worn through and the base metal is in contact.
Keep the unknown ones for occasional wear. The problem is cumulative contact, so an hour at a party is a very different thing from eight hours a night.
Make the daily pair the one you can name. That single change does most of the work, because most of her total exposure comes from whatever she wears without thinking about it.

On how they're made. They come from a precision engineering facility that has been operating for more than forty years and supplies ear-piercing systems worldwide. Because piercing systems have to clear regulated British standards, the jewelry made on those lines falls under the same standard.
Every pair is laser-scanned to confirm the stones are set correctly and finished properly, then sealed in its capsule, sterilized, batch-numbered and dated. The batch number and the date are on the packaging, which means you can look at them rather than take my word for it.

Questions parents ask next
What age are these suitable for? They're for children with healed piercings, roughly three and up. They aren't infant products and they aren't piercing studs.
Should I buy a multipack so she has variety? Variety is fine when every pair is a known material. Mixed multipacks of unspecified metal are the most common way an unidentifiable reaction gets introduced.
Can she wear them for sport? Material and fit matter more than the activity. A low-profile stud with a back that seats firmly is the sensible shape. Check school and club rules, which often require earrings out for contact sport.
How do I know when to replace a pair? When the post changes color, when the back no longer holds, or when marks start appearing on her skin. A worn coating can't be restored.
Is a higher price safer? No. The specification predicts behavior. The price doesn't.
