Earrings to wear every day have to survive the hardest test in the category: continuous contact, sleep, sport, water and years of it. That means a named stable metal all the way through to the post and the back, a light low-profile design, and a back that seats rather than grips. Why the everyday pair matters more than the special one
This is the part most families get backwards, and it's worth stating plainly.
The pair she wears to a party is on her ears for four hours. The pair she wears to school is on her ears for the other three hundred and sixty-four days.
Exposure accumulates, and sensitization is cumulative. The immune system reacts once it's been exposed enough, over enough time, to learn a metal. So the overwhelming majority of her lifetime exposure comes from whatever she wears without thinking about it.
Which means the everyday pair deserves the research and the special pair mostly doesn't. Most people spend it the other way round.
An earring is unusual anyway. She's pierced at five or six and wears metal in her body more or less continuously into adulthood. It isn't a medical device, and the duration of contact is closer to an implant than to anything else she puts on.
What daily wear actually does to an earring
Four forces, all constant.
Friction. The post inside the piercing channel, the back sliding on and off, the front catching on hair, collars, pillows and seatbelts. This is what wears a coating through, and it goes first at the post and the back rather than the visible front.
Moisture. Perspiration all day, water from showering and swimming, and very little airflow inside the channel.
Chemistry. Shampoo, conditioner, sunscreen, lotion and hairspray, all of which end up on the lobe.
Time. Continuous contact, which turns a small release rate into a meaningful cumulative exposure.
An earring that copes with all four is what "everyday" actually requires. Most jewelry isn't designed against that standard, because most jewelry isn't worn that way.
The material specification for earrings to wear every day
A named metal with a grade. S316L Surgical Steel is a specific grade chosen for medical instruments and implants because it resists corrosion. Pure 24 karat gold has no alloy at all. "Stainless steel" and "gold" on their own are categories.
The post and the back the same as the front. Backs are commonly bought in from a different supplier, so a description of an earring may not cover them. On a daily pair that matters more than on any other, because the back is against her lobe every hour.
A test, a result and a laboratory. ASTM F2923, EN 1811, CPSIA. "Tested" isn't a result.
No coating over an unnamed base. Coatings wear through, and the wear happens fastest on a pair that's worn constantly. On a daily pair, the base metal isn't a hypothetical.
The design specification
Light. A pair of 4mm studs should weigh about as much as a paperclip. Weight pulls downward on a soft lobe all day, every day.
Low profile. Less to catch on a jumper, a hairbrush, a car seat, a pillow. Every catch is a small tug on the piercing.
Stone set flush and level. Fewer edges, less to collect debris, less to work loose.
A back that seats rather than grips. This is the one that matters most for daily wear, because a back held by friction alone loosens over hundreds of on-and-off cycles, and the natural response is to push it on harder, which compresses the lobe.
Small enough to sleep in comfortably. A tall setting pressed into a lobe against a pillow for eight hours is the most common cause of morning soreness.
What fails at daily wear
Plated pieces over unnamed bases. They look identical to good jewelry on day one and the difference emerges at month six.
Rose gold. Copper by definition, and daily contact maximizes what copper does.
Sterling silver as the daily pair. 925 leaves 7.5 percent, usually copper, which tarnishes and marks.
Heavy or tall designs. Fine for an evening, punishing over years.
Mixed multipacks. The most common way unknown materials enter daily rotation, and the reason so few reactions ever get traced.
Anything she has to force the back onto.
The routine that makes daily wear work
Two minutes a week.
Take them out weekly. Wash the earring and the lobe with warm water and a little mild soap. Rub the post gently between finger and thumb, because that's where build-up collects. Dry both properly.
Give the channel an hour of air if the day allows.
Check the back tension while they're out. Small gap between back and ear, no indentation in the lobe.
Jewelry on last, off first. Everything else goes on before the earrings, and the earrings come out before anything else comes off.
Dry the lobes after swimming and bathing.
Watch the post. A color change there means a coating has worn through, and it's the point to stop wearing that pair rather than to clean it harder.
A year of daily wear, in practice
It helps to think about what a daily pair actually goes through, because the list is longer than most people picture.
School. Five days a week, jumpers pulled over her head, hair tied and untied, and a playground. Some schools ask for studs only, which is worth checking before you buy anything with a profile.
Sport. Many schools require earrings out for contact sport and gymnastics. That means the back comes off and goes back on repeatedly, in a changing room, often in a hurry. A back that seats on a notch survives that. A back held by friction alone is the one that ends up on the floor.
Swimming. Chlorinated water sits in the channel and dries there. Steel handles chlorides well, which is part of why the grade matters, but the lobe still wants drying afterwards.
Sleep. Around a third of the total contact time, with the earring pressed into the lobe rather than resting on it.
Growth. Lobes thicken as she gets older, and a back set at the right tension at seven can be tight at eleven. Worth rechecking once a year.
None of that is unusual. It's simply what happens to an object worn continuously by a child, and it's the reason a piece designed for occasional wear tends to fail somewhere in the middle of it.
Can she sleep in them?
With a suitable pair, yes, and it's worth understanding what it costs.
Sleeping roughly doubles daily contact time, and it concentrates pressure, since the earring is pressed into the lobe against a pillow for hours without her moving to relieve it.
That matters a great deal if the metal is unknown and much less if it's named, stable and tested. With a good pair it becomes a comfort question rather than a safety one, and the answer is a low-profile stud on a back that isn't over-tightened.
If her ears are already sore, a night off helps and a settled piercing won't close overnight.
How many pairs does she need?
Fewer than most people assume.
One good daily pair, worn and cleaned properly, does more for her ears than ten unknown ones rotated. Rotating between two known pairs is a reasonable upgrade, because each gets cleaned regularly.
The problem is never variety itself. It's variety in materials you can't name, because that's the situation where a reaction can't be traced to anything.

The setting, the post and the butterfly back all carry that same core. On a pair worn every day, the post is in the channel continuously and the back is against the lobe continuously, which is why they matter as much as the front.
The posts carry a double-notch system. The butterfly seats at a defined tension rather than gripping by friction, so it doesn't loosen over months of daily on-and-off, and it doesn't need to be pushed hard onto the lobe.
Sizes are 4mm and 5mm, low-profile, with stones set flush and level, sized for a young ear rather than shrunk from an adult design. Light enough that a pair weighs about as much as a paperclip.
Independently tested by SGS across eight pairs, covering the setting, the post and the butterfly back. Nickel release not detected under EN 1811. Tested to ASTM F2923 and CPSIA, with lead below a tenth of the United States legal limit. Report BTO 341803/1, and you can ask me for it.

Questions parents ask next
Should she take them out for school sport? Check the school's rules, which often require it for contact sport. Otherwise it's about catching rather than material.
Is it bad for the piercing to never change earrings? Not inherently, provided they come out weekly for cleaning. What causes trouble is a pair left in for months untouched.
What if she wants something different for weekends? Entirely reasonable. Keep the daily pair a known material and treat the weekend one as occasional wear, which limits how much exposure it contributes.
How long should a daily pair last? A solid, named metal can last indefinitely. A plated pair is on a clock, and the post tells you when it's up.
Gold or steel for everyday? Both of ours use the same core through setting, post and back and passed the same tests. Preference and budget, not safety.
