What earrings can she wear once her piercing has healed?

The earrings she wears after a piercing heals are a daily-wear decision, not an aftercare one. Here is what to look for in that first pair.

Once it's healed, the question changes completely. The healing window belongs to whoever did the piercing, and their guidance is the one to follow while it lasts. After that she's choosing earrings she'll wear daily for years, and the material becomes the thing that matters most. Two different moments, two different answers

Most advice online blurs these, and advice written for one is often wrong for the other.

The piercing and the weeks after it. A fresh piercing is an open wound. The person who made it fitted studs chosen for that purpose and gave you aftercare guidance. Follow it, and keep those studs in for as long as they say. If something looks wrong during that window, go back to them or to your doctor.

Everything after that. Now the wound has closed and the channel is lined with skin. She's choosing earrings for daily life: school, sport, sleep, swimming, years of it. Different question entirely.

Why the second moment matters more than people expect

An earring is unusual among the things a child owns.

She's pierced at five or six and from then on wears metal in her body more or less continuously, into adulthood. It isn't a medical device. But the duration of contact is closer to an implant than to anything else she puts on.

That's why the grade of metal is worth caring about at this point specifically. During healing, the piercer's studs are in for a few weeks. After healing, whatever you choose is in for years.

And exposure accumulates. Sensitization is cumulative and generally permanent: the immune system reacts once it's been exposed enough, over enough time, to learn a metal. Nickel allergy affects around one in five people in North America, and the American Academy of Pediatrics reported in 2020 that nickel allergic contact dermatitis in children has nearly quadrupled over three decades, with at least 1.1 million children in the United States already sensitized.

So the first pair after the piercing studs is a more consequential choice than the piercing studs were.

How to know it's healed

That's a judgment for whoever performed the piercing rather than for an article, and they'll usually give you a timeframe up front.

What's worth knowing is that "looks fine" and "healed" aren't the same thing. A channel can look settled on the surface while the tissue is still maturing underneath. If you're unsure, ask the person who did it rather than guessing from a calendar.

And if there's spreading redness, heat, swelling, colored discharge or worsening pain at any point, that's your pediatrician rather than either of us.

What to look for in her earrings after the piercing heals

A named metal with a grade. "Stainless steel" is a family of hundreds of alloys. S316L Surgical Steel is a specific grade, chosen for medical instruments and implants because it resists corrosion. "Gold" is similarly broad: picture the metal in 24 parts and the karat is how many are gold. 9 karat is 9 parts gold and 15 parts undisclosed alloy.

The post and the back confirmed as the same material. Backs are commonly bought in from a different supplier than the earrings, so a brand can describe an earring accurately while the back is something else. It sits against the lobe as long as the front does, and the post sits inside the channel.

A test, a result and a laboratory. ASTM F2923 for children's jewelry, EN 1811 for nickel release, CPSIA for lead. "Tested" isn't a result.

Light and low-profile. A pair of 4mm studs should weigh about as much as a paperclip. A tall setting catches on hair, collars and pillows, and every catch tugs the piercing.

A back that seats rather than grips. Firm, not tight, with a small gap between the back and the ear.

The mistake to avoid at this stage

The most common one is a multipack.

It's the natural moment for it. The piercing has healed, she's excited, and a set of ten pairs in assorted colors feels like the reward.

The problem is that a child works through five or six pairs of unknown composition in a fortnight, and if her ears react, nobody can say which pair did it. That's the single reason so few reactions ever get traced to a product.

If you want variety, get it in materials you can name. And keep the pair she wears daily, and sleeps in, a known one.

The transition, practically

Change them somewhere calm rather than in a rush before school.

Wash your hands, and the new earrings, before they go in.

Keep the first new pair in consistently for a week rather than swapping around. A contact reaction usually shows within a few days of steady wear, and consistent wear is how you'd notice.

Note which pair. Start the habit now. Two or three entries reveal a pattern that a year of guessing wouldn't.

Jewelry on last, off first. Shampoo, sunscreen, lotion and hairspray all end up on the lobe.

Then weekly: take them out, wash the earring and the lobe with warm water and mild soap, dry both, and give the channel an hour of air.

The posts carry a double-notch system, so the butterfly seats at a defined tension rather than gripping by friction. Firm enough for a school day, manageable by a child, and it doesn't compress the lobe.

Sizes are 4mm and 5mm, sized for a young ear rather than shrunk from an adult design.

They come from a precision engineering facility that has operated for over forty years and supplies ear-piercing systems worldwide, so the same regulated British standards apply to what comes off those lines. Every pair is laser-scanned to confirm the stones are set correctly, then sealed in its capsule, sterilized, batch-numbered and dated.

Independently tested by SGS across eight pairs, covering the setting, the post and the butterfly back. Nickel release not detected under EN 1811. Tested to ASTM F2923 and CPSIA, with lead below a tenth of the United States legal limit. Report BTO 341803/1.

Questions parents ask next

Can she go straight from piercing studs to any earring? Once the piercer says it's healed, yes, though the material matters more from that point rather than less, because the wear becomes continuous.

Will the hole close if we take them out to swap? A healed piercing of several months is stable over a few days. Newer ones close faster, which is a question for whoever performed it.

Should the first pair be gold or steel? Both of ours use the same S316L Surgical Steel core through setting, post and back, and both passed the same tests. It's preference and budget rather than safety.

She wants hoops. Are those different? The material question is identical. Hoops move more and catch more, so for a child in her first year after healing, studs are the easier starting point.

What if her ears react to the first pair after healing? Take them out, note which pair, and reintroduce one pair at a time. If it keeps happening, ask your pediatrician about patch testing.
