Earrings with no accessible copper won't turn her ears green. In practice that means pure 24 karat gold, stable steel grades like S316L Surgical Steel, and implant-grade titanium. What causes green marks is copper reacting with moisture and skin acids, so the fix is a metal that either doesn't contain it or doesn't release it. The one-sentence rule for earrings that don't turn ears green

If copper can reach her skin, her skin can go green. Everything below is working out where copper hides.

What works

S316L Surgical Steel

A specific grade of stainless steel with low carbon content and added molybdenum, which is what gives it its corrosion resistance. It's used in medical instruments and surgical implants, chosen there for exactly the property that matters here: it resists corroding, so it releases very little of anything.

No copper as a structural component. It does contain nickel, as almost all austenitic stainless steels do, which is why the useful measure is release rather than presence. That's what EN 1811 testing exists for.

The catch: "stainless steel" on its own means nothing. It's a family of hundreds of alloys. The grade is the information.

Pure 24 karat gold

24 karat means all 24 parts are gold, with no alloy at all. Nothing present to react.

Gold is one of the least reactive metals there is, which is why it's used in dentistry and electronics.

The catch: pure gold is soft, so it's used as a finish over a stronger core rather than as a whole earring. Which makes the core the question, and it should be a named, stable metal rather than an unnamed base.

Implant-grade titanium

Genuinely inert and biocompatible. No copper.

The catch: grades vary, and "titanium" alone is as uninformative as "stainless steel" alone. It's also harder to work into fine settings, so the range of designs is narrower.

The pattern is consistent. The more unnamed alloy there is, the more room there is for copper, and the more likely the marks.

Rose gold deserves its own line

Rose gold gets recommended constantly for children, and it's the single most predictable cause of green marks in the category.

The pink color is the copper. More copper means a deeper pink. There's no such thing as rose gold without it, at any karat, from any brand, at any price.

If a child has ever gone green in rose gold, that isn't bad luck or a poor quality piece. It's the material behaving exactly as it's made to.

The plating trap

This is the part that catches people out, because it looks fine for months.

A plated earring is a layer of gold over a base metal. While the layer holds, skin touches gold and nothing happens. The layer wears through at the points of most friction, which is the post and the back rather than the visible front. After that, skin is against the base, which on inexpensive jewelry is frequently brass.

So the same earring is copper-free and then isn't, with no announcement and no visible change to the front.

Check the post. If the front still looks gold but the post has gone a darker steel color, the coating has worn and she's been wearing the base metal for a while.

That delay has a second consequence. A reaction to a metal builds with exposure over months or years, so by the time her ears object, several pairs have been worn and the pair that started it is long gone. The one responsible almost never gets identified.

Why the market makes this harder than it should be

There's a cost logic behind most of it, and it comes down to two forces: cost and speed.

Making a product at the lowest possible cost means cutting the quality of the gold or the base metal, which introduces alloys of unknown composition. And speed matters too. If an item is in stock at a large jewelry supplier, it can ship almost immediately in small quantities, with no re-checking of standards and no certification. Suppliers want the sale, so the answer you get is the answer that closes it.

That's not usually a brand setting out to mislead anyone. It's a brand repeating a description it was given by a supplier who was repeating a description they were given, with nobody in the chain able to check.

Which is why the useful question isn't "is this good quality?" It's "who in this chain can actually tell me what the metal is?"

How to check a listing in 60 seconds

  1. Search the page for a number attached to a metal. S316L, 316L, 24K, 14K, 925. No numbers means the page is describing appearance rather than composition.
  2. Look for the words post and back. If neither appears, the description almost certainly covers the visible part only.
  3. Look for the word rose, or a pink photograph. That's copper.
  4. Look for a named laboratory and a stated result. "Tested" without a tester is a claim about intent.
  5. Check the return policy. For a first purchase from a brand you don't know, that's what determines whether you can afford to be wrong.

If a listing fails all five, it doesn't mean the earrings will mark her. It means you can't tell, and you'd be finding out on her ears.

What to ignore

"Hypoallergenic." Not regulated in jewelry, no test required, no definition behind it.

"Nickel-free." A claim about composition rather than release, and irrelevant to green marks anyway, which are caused by copper rather than nickel.

"Tarnish-resistant." Describes the surface, not the base metal underneath it.

Price. A costly 9 karat piece can put more copper against her skin than an inexpensive well-specified steel one.

A note on what "won't" can honestly mean

No brand should tell you a material can never mark anyone under any conditions, and this article is not doing that.

What can be said accurately is narrower and more useful. A metal with no copper available to reach skin cannot produce copper compounds, and copper compounds are what green marks are made of. Remove the copper and you have removed that mechanism.

Other mechanisms still exist. Abrasion can leave gray marks from soft metals. Products applied over jewelry can leave residue that reads as dark smudging. Neither of those is the green everybody is asking about, and both are reduced by the same habits.

So the honest version of the promise is this. Choose a named, stable metal with no accessible copper, confirm the post and the back are the same material, and green marks stop being a thing that happens to her. That is a claim about chemistry rather than about a brand, and you can check it against any product from any seller.

What we do

The difference is what we plate and what we plate it onto: pure 24 karat gold over surgical steel, rather than thin low-karat gold over a base metal nobody will name.

We don't make rose gold, for the reason above.

The setting, the post and the butterfly back all carry the same S316L Surgical Steel core. That's the answer to question 2 in the checklist, and it's the one most brands can't give, because backs are commonly bought in from a different supplier.

Independently tested by SGS. I chose the pieces with the largest surface area touching an ear and had the setting, the post and the butterfly back all tested, across eight pairs. Nickel release not detected under EN 1811. Tested to ASTM F2923 and CPSIA, with lead below a tenth of the United States legal limit. Report BTO 341803/1, and you can ask me for it.

Questions parents ask next

Is there anything that's guaranteed never to mark? Nothing in jewelry should be described that way. What you can do is remove the cause: no accessible copper, a stable metal, and a named grade rather than an adjective.

She's fine in gold but goes green in silver. Is that normal? Yes, and it's common. Sterling silver is 92.5 percent silver with the rest usually copper, so it can put more copper against skin than a high-karat gold piece.

Can she wear the pairs that mark her, occasionally? For an hour at a party, most parents accept the trade. The problem is cumulative contact, so occasional wear is a genuine middle ground.

What about gold filled or vermeil? Both are thicker layers than standard plating, so they last longer. Both are still layers over something else, and vermeil sits on sterling silver, which contains copper.

Do birthstone earrings behave differently? The stone doesn't change anything. The metal it's set in does.
