Earrings turn ears black for two reasons, and neither is the same as the one that turns them green. One is abrasion, where tiny particles of metal rub off against skin. The other is a reaction between the metal and something applied to it, most often cosmetics, soaps, lotions or perfume. Green is copper corroding. Black is usually friction or chemistry from outside. Black and green aren't the same problem
Worth separating, because they point at different causes and different fixes.
Green is copper corroding. Copper meets moisture and skin acids, forms copper salts, and those compounds are green. It's a chemical reaction between the metal and the skin.
Black or dark gray is more often physical. Metal particles abrade off the surface and deposit on the skin. It can also be a chemical reaction, but usually with something applied to the ear rather than with the skin itself.
So if she goes green with one pair and black with another, that isn't inconsistency. They're different mechanisms.
What makes earrings turn ears black
Abrasion
Soft metals shed microscopic particles when they rub against skin. Those particles are dark, and they collect where the friction is.
Silver does this readily, particularly sterling silver, which is softer than most people assume. Low-karat gold does it too. The effect is worse when skin is slightly damp, and worse again when there's anything mildly abrasive on it.
Which brings us to the second cause.
Cosmetics, soaps and lotions
This is the one almost nobody connects.
Many everyday products contain fine mineral particles or compounds that act as gentle abrasives. Foundation, powder, sunscreen, some moisturizers, and even certain soaps leave residue on skin. When metal rubs against skin coated with that residue, particles come off the metal much faster than they otherwise would.
The result is a dark gray or black smudge around the piercing that looks alarming and washes off easily.
The fix is a habit: jewelry on last, off first. Everything else goes on before the earrings, and the earrings come out before anything else comes off.
Tarnish transferring
Silver and copper-containing alloys tarnish, forming dark surface compounds. Those compounds transfer onto skin on contact.
Tarnish is a surface reaction with oxygen, moisture and sulfur compounds in air and on skin, and it happens against a lobe as readily as it happens in a drawer.
A coating that has worn through
If the front of the earring still looks gold but the post has gone a darker steel color, the plating has worn through at the point of most friction. Now a different metal is against her skin, and it may behave completely differently from the one you thought you bought.
This is also why marks can start after months of nothing. Her ears didn't change. The coating ran out.
Is it harmful?
The mark itself isn't. It washes off with soap and water and it does no damage on its own.
What it indicates is worth taking seriously. Black marks mean material is transferring from the earring onto and into her skin, and that's happening inside the piercing channel too, where the skin is thinner and more permeable than on the outside of the lobe.
Prolonged exposure to reactive metals is what leads to sensitivity over time. Nickel allergy affects around one in five people in North America, and the American Academy of Pediatrics reported in 2020 that nickel allergic contact dermatitis in children has nearly quadrupled over three decades, with at least 1.1 million children in the United States already sensitized. Sensitization is cumulative and generally permanent.
If the ear is also red and hot, swollen, discharging, or increasingly painful, that's a different situation and one for your pediatrician rather than an article.
What to do
Wash it off and see how fast it comes back. A mark that returns within a day of wearing the same pair is telling you the metal is actively shedding.
Change the order of your routine. Jewelry on last, off first. This alone resolves a lot of black-mark cases, because most of them involve product residue.
Look at the post. A color change there means a coating has gone.
Note which pairs do it. Two or three entries usually reveal a pattern.
Then look at the material. A named metal with a grade, including the post and the back. Not an adjective on a listing.
Which metals do it least
S316L Surgical Steel. Hard, corrosion-resistant, and it doesn't shed readily. It's the grade used in medical instruments and implants for exactly those reasons.
Pure 24 karat gold. Chemically inert, so no tarnish and no reaction with products. It's soft, which is why it works as a finish over a harder core rather than as a whole earring.
Implant-grade titanium. Stable and inert, though grades vary and the name alone tells you little.
Sterling silver is the one most likely to mark, because it's soft and because the copper in it tarnishes.
What we do

24K Pure Gold, which is pure 24 karat gold finished onto a solid S316L Surgical Steel core with Aunix™ 24K, our engineered gold finish. At 24 karat the gold has no alloy in it, so there's nothing in the finish that tarnishes.
The setting, the post and the butterfly back all carry the same core. That matters here because the post and back are where friction concentrates, and they're also the components most commonly bought in from a different supplier and left out of any testing.
Ours weren't. Independently tested by SGS across eight pairs, covering the setting, the post and the butterfly back. Nickel release not detected under EN 1811. Tested to ASTM F2923 and CPSIA, with lead below a tenth of the United States legal limit. Report BTO 341803/1.

Questions parents ask next
Is black worse than green? Neither is dangerous as a mark. Both tell you material is transferring. Green points more specifically at copper.
Why does it only happen sometimes? Usually because of what else is on her skin that day. Sunscreen in summer and moisturizer in winter both make it more likely.
Could it be the piercing rather than the earring? A settled piercing that marks with some earrings and not others is telling you it's the earring.
Does black mean the earrings are cheap? Not necessarily. Sterling silver marks readily and is not a cheap material. It's about the metal's properties rather than its price.
Will polishing the earrings help? Temporarily, and abrasive polishing removes plating faster than ordinary wear does. On a plated pair it makes the underlying problem arrive sooner.
