Why do earrings turn ears green?

Earrings turn ears green when copper in the metal reacts with moisture and skin acids. Here is what causes it, what it means, and how to stop it.

Earrings turn ears green because copper in the metal reacts with moisture, oxygen and the mild acids in skin. That reaction forms copper salts, which are green, and they transfer onto the skin around the piercing. Copper is in most low-karat gold, in brass, and in the unnamed base metals under cheap plating. Why earrings turn ears green, chemically

Copper is a reactive metal. Put it against warm, slightly acidic, slightly damp skin for hours at a time and it starts to corrode at the surface.

The products of that corrosion are copper compounds, and copper compounds are green. It's the same reaction that turns a copper roof or a bronze statue green, running much faster because the conditions in a pierced ear speed it up.

The green you see on her skin isn't dye coming off the earring. It's new material that didn't exist before the metal met her skin.

That's why it washes off and comes back, and why scrubbing the earring doesn't help.

Where the copper comes from

Low-karat gold. Karat measures purity. Picture the metal divided into 24 parts, and the karat is how many are gold. 9 karat is 9 parts gold and 15 parts other metal, and copper is almost always in that remainder because it hardens gold and costs little.

Rose gold, always. The pink color is the copper. There's no such thing as rose gold without it, which is why rose gold and green marks go together so often.

Brass and unnamed base metals. Brass is mostly copper. It sits under a great deal of inexpensive plated jewelry, and it's very rarely named on a listing.

Sterling silver. Marked 925, meaning 92.5 percent silver. The remaining portion is usually copper, and it isn't usually disclosed.

Why plated earrings go green later rather than sooner

This is the pattern most parents describe, and it has a straightforward explanation.

A plated earring is a layer of gold over a base metal. While that layer is intact, skin touches gold, gold barely reacts, and nothing happens.

Every layer wears through eventually. It goes first at the points of most friction, which is the post and the back rather than the visible front. After that, skin is against the base metal, which is often brass.

So a pair can be perfectly fine for months and then start marking, with no visible change to the front of the earring. Nothing changed about her ears. The coating ran out.

Check the post. If the front still looks gold but the post has gone a darker steel color, that's your answer.

What makes it worse

Perspiration, which is mildly acidic. Warm weather, sport and PE all increase it.

Water left sitting after swimming, bathing or showering. Not the water itself so much as the moisture trapped between metal and skin afterwards.

Products applied over the top. Perfume, hairspray, sunscreen, lotion and soap all end up on the lobe. The habit that fixes a surprising number of cases: jewelry on last, off first.

Sleeping in them, which extends contact time considerably.

Her own skin chemistry. How much she perspires, and its composition, change how quickly the reaction runs. That's why one sister marks and the other doesn't in the same pair, and neither is doing anything wrong.

Is it dangerous?

The staining itself isn't. It washes off with soap and water and it does no harm on its own.

What it's telling you matters more than the mark. Green means the metal is actively corroding against her skin and transferring material into it. That transfer is happening inside the piercing channel as well, where the skin is thinner and more permeable than on the outside of the lobe.

Prolonged exposure to reactive metals is what leads to sensitivity over time. Nickel allergy affects around one in five people in North America, and the American Academy of Pediatrics reported in 2020 that nickel allergic contact dermatitis in children has nearly quadrupled over three decades, with at least 1.1 million children in the United States already sensitized. Sensitization is cumulative and generally permanent.

So treat green marks as information rather than as a cosmetic annoyance. They're a visible sign of something that's also happening where you can't see it.

If the ear is red and hot, swollen, discharging, or getting more painful, that's a separate matter and one for your pediatrician.

How to stop it

Work out the material. Named metal, named grade, and what the post and back are made of. If the listing gives you an adjective instead, you don't have an answer.

Avoid the obvious sources. Rose gold contains copper by definition. Low-karat gold usually does. Unnamed plated jewelry usually sits on brass.

Jewelry on last, off first. Everything else goes on before the earrings and the earrings come out before anything else comes off.

Take them out for swimming, or dry the lobe properly afterwards.

Stop wearing the pair once the post changes color. The coating has gone and cleaning won't bring it back.

Skip the nail polish trick. Painting clear polish on posts is widely suggested and it's a patch at best. It chips quickly, it isn't intended for prolonged skin contact, and it hides the problem rather than removing it.

We don't offer rose gold, and this article is the reason. The pink is the copper, so rose gold can't exist without the thing that causes green marks.

Questions parents ask next

Why does it happen with some earrings and not others? Because copper content varies enormously between pieces, and because coatings delay it. Two earrings that look identical can behave completely differently.

Does green mean she's allergic? No. Green staining is a chemical reaction on the surface of the skin, not an immune response. She may also be developing a sensitivity, but the mark itself doesn't prove it.

How do I get the green off her skin? Soap and water. It's a surface deposit rather than a stain in the skin.

Can real gold turn ears green? Unplated gold at high karat, essentially no. Low-karat gold, yes, because of the copper in the alloy rather than the gold itself.

Does it happen more in summer? Usually yes. Perspiration increases, sunscreen sits on the lobe, and swimming leaves moisture trapped against the metal. All three speed the reaction up, which is why parents often notice it first in July rather than January.

Can I test a pair before she wears it? Home nickel spot tests exist and they test for nickel rather than copper, so they will not answer this particular question. The practical test is a short wear trial with a return policy behind it.

Will it stop if I clean the earrings more often? No. The reaction happens at the point of contact, so cleaning removes the evidence rather than the cause.
