You stop earrings turning her ears green by changing what the metal is, not by cleaning harder or sealing the posts. Green marks are copper reacting with moisture and skin acids, so the only real fix is wearing something without accessible copper in it. Everything else slows it down at best. Our Polished Surgical Steel collection has none.

Why the usual advice doesn't work

Three fixes get suggested constantly. Here's what each one actually does.

Clear nail polish on the posts. It creates a temporary barrier. It chips within days, it isn't intended for prolonged contact with skin inside a piercing, and while it's intact it hides the reaction rather than stopping it. The metal is still there, still corroding, and you've lost your only visible warning.

Cleaning the earrings more often. This removes the green residue from the metal. It does nothing to the reaction, which restarts the moment the earring goes back in. You're wiping up rather than turning off the tap.

Keeping them dry. Genuinely helps, and only partially. Perspiration is produced continuously and you can't eliminate it. Reducing moisture slows the reaction and doesn't stop it.

None of these is useless. All of them treat a symptom.

What actually stops earrings turning ears green

1. Identify the copper

Copper is the cause, so the job is finding where it is.

Low-karat gold. Karat measures purity. Picture the metal in 24 parts and the karat is how many are gold. 9 karat is 9 parts gold and 15 parts other metal, and copper is almost always in that remainder.

Rose gold, always. The pink color is the copper. Rose gold cannot exist without it.

Brass and unnamed base metals. Brass is mostly copper, and it sits under a great deal of inexpensive plated jewelry.

Sterling silver. 925 means 92.5 percent silver, and the remainder is usually copper.

If a listing names none of this, assume the answer is one of the above.

2. Move to a named, stable metal

The two properties that matter are stability, meaning the metal resists corrosion rather than shedding material, and being named, because a metal you can't identify is a metal whose behavior you can't predict.

S316L Surgical Steel is a specific grade, chosen for medical instruments and implants for exactly that stability. Pure 24 karat gold has no alloy in it at all, so there's no copper present to react. Implant-grade titanium is stable too.

"Stainless steel" on its own isn't an answer, because it's a family of hundreds of alloys. The grade is the information.

3. Check the post and the back, not just the front

This is the step nearly everyone skips.

Backs are commonly generic, bought in from a different supplier than the earrings themselves. The finish may not match the front, so a gold-colored back can be a coating over brass while the front is something else. And where testing exists, it may not have covered the back at all.

The post matters more still, because it sits inside the piercing channel where skin is thinner and more permeable than on the outside of the lobe.

Ask directly: are the post and the back the same material as the front? A vague answer is an answer.

4. Change the habits that accelerate it

Jewelry on last, off first. Perfume, hairspray, sunscreen, lotion and soap all end up on the lobe and speed the reaction up. Earrings go in after everything else and come out before anything else comes off. This single change resolves a surprising number of cases on its own.

Take them out for swimming, or dry the lobe properly afterwards.

Take them out at night if the pair is one you're unsure about. It roughly halves daily contact time.

Stop wearing a pair once the post changes color. That means the coating has worn through and she's now wearing the base metal. A worn coating can't be restored.

Why this got harder over the last few years

There's a commercial explanation worth knowing.

The price of gold has risen sharply over the past five years, roughly two and a half times. That raises what it costs to make any piece of gold jewelry, and a brand facing that has two choices. Raise prices, or hold prices and reduce what goes into the product.

Raising prices costs customers, so the reduction is the more common route. Karat drops. The core moves to something cheaper and unnamed. A coating goes over the top to keep the appearance intact for the first few months.

That's why "it was fine last year" and "this brand used to be good" are both things parents say more often than they used to.

What to look for on a product page

Five things. A brand that gives you all five is telling you something real.

  1. A named metal with a grade, not a family name
  2. The karat, if it's gold, and what the rest of the alloy is
  3. Whether the post and the back are the same material as the front
  4. A named test and a named result, not a badge
  5. If there's a coating, what's underneath it

A listing that offers "hypoallergenic" instead of those five has answered none of them. That word isn't regulated in jewelry and requires no test.

We don't make rose gold, because the pink is the copper.

The setting, the post and the butterfly back all carry the same core. Independently tested by SGS to ASTM F2923 and CPSIA, with nickel release not detected under EN 1811 and lead below a tenth of the United States legal limit. Report BTO 341803/1, and you can ask me for it.

Questions parents ask next

Will a barrier product work? Only while it's intact, which isn't long on a post that moves inside a piercing all day. It also removes the visible signal that tells you what's happening.

Do I need to throw the old earrings away? Not necessarily. If she likes them, keep them for occasional wear and take them out at night. The problem is cumulative contact, so reducing it helps.

Is there a metal that never marks? Pure gold, implant-grade titanium and stable steel grades like S316L are all far less likely, because there's little accessible copper to react. No metal is literally inert in every condition.

Her ears go green with silver, not gold. Why? Sterling silver is 92.5 percent silver, and the rest is usually copper. So a silver piece can put more copper against skin than a high-karat gold one.

Does it mean the earrings are fake? No. Plenty of genuine, hallmarked, correctly described jewelry contains copper. The stamp certifies the gold content, not the rest of the recipe.
