Nickel allergy in children is identified by the pattern rather than by any one symptom. A nickel reaction itches as much as it's sore, appears hours rather than minutes after contact, shows up wherever the metal touched, and returns every single time she wears that jewelry. It's only confirmed properly by patch testing, which a doctor arranges. Our materials page explains what we use instead.

How common this actually is

Around one in five people in North America is affected by nickel allergy. It's the single most common cause of allergic contact dermatitis, well ahead of anything else.

The American Academy of Pediatrics reported in 2020 that nickel allergic contact dermatitis in children has nearly quadrupled over three decades, with at least 1.1 million children in the United States already sensitized.

Girls carry most of that burden, and the reason is exposure rather than biology. They're pierced earlier, wear earrings longer, and change them more often. Across five European countries, being female raised the odds of nickel allergy more than fivefold. In one Norwegian population study, the single best predictor of nickel sensitivity was a reaction to inexpensive earrings.

A 2025 systematic review found people with piercings were nearly six times more likely to be nickel allergic, and estimated that roughly 82 percent of nickel allergy in the general population is attributable to piercing.

None of that is a reason to panic, and none of it means you did something wrong. It's a reason to know what her earrings are made of.

What nickel allergy in children looks like

Itching, often first. Itch usually arrives before anything visible. Children rarely report it. They rub instead, and the rubbing gets read as fidgeting.

Redness where the metal touched. Confined to the contact area at first, and it may spread slightly beyond it, which pure pressure irritation doesn't do.

Delayed onset. This is the most useful distinguishing feature. A nickel reaction typically appears hours after contact, sometimes a day later. Pressure from a tight back hurts almost immediately.

Dry, scaly or slightly weeping skin in a stronger reaction.

It repeats. Same jewelry, same result, every time. That reliability is the strongest signal you'll get without testing.

It can appear in other places too. Jean studs, belt buckles, watch backs, glasses frames, zips and phone cases all commonly contain nickel. A child who reacts to earrings and also to the button on her jeans is telling you something fairly clearly.

What it isn't

Three things get mistaken for nickel allergy regularly.

Pressure from a tight back. Hurts fast, eases fast, usually leaves a visible indentation in the lobe, and doesn't itch much. Check for the indentation before blaming metal.

Trapped moisture. Water sitting in the piercing after swimming or bathing makes skin itchy without any metal reaction at all. Flat backs make this worse by holding moisture against the lobe.

Infection. Different situation, different response. Spreading redness, heat, swelling, colored discharge, or pain that's worsening rather than settling all point to your pediatrician rather than to a change of earrings. That's a clinical judgment and it needs someone who can look at it.

Why it can appear after years of nothing

This confuses parents more than any other part, and there's a clear explanation.

Sensitization is cumulative. The immune system doesn't react on first contact. It reacts once it's been exposed enough times, over enough time, to learn the metal. That threshold varies between children and it can be reached after months or after a decade.

So a girl can wear earrings happily from six to eleven and then react. Nothing changed about her. She reached the point where her immune system had seen enough.

There's a second reason too. Coatings delay contact. A plated earring keeps the base metal away from skin until the coating wears through, usually at the post first. By the time it does and a reaction follows, several pairs have been worn and the pair that started it is long forgotten.

This is why the objection I hear most often deserves a careful answer. "Her ears are fine, she wears earrings all the time, she's never reacted." That's true right now, and it isn't evidence about later. No reaction today doesn't mean no reaction in three years, and childhood is precisely when the exposure that leads to sensitization begins.

How it gets confirmed

Patch testing is the proper answer. A doctor applies small amounts of specific substances to the skin, usually on the back, under adhesive patches. They stay on for around 48 hours and the skin is assessed after that and again a couple of days later.

It identifies exactly which metals she reacts to, and that's the part worth having. It converts a lifetime of guessing into a rule she can apply in any shop, at any age.

Ask your pediatrician about it if reactions keep recurring. It's a routine procedure.

Home spot tests exist, sold as kits that detect nickel release from an object. They test the item rather than the child, and they're a rough screen rather than a diagnosis. They can be useful for checking jewelry you already own, and they can't tell you whether she's sensitized.

What you can do while you work it out

Take the earrings out for a few days. A settled piercing won't close in that time, and if things calm quickly you've learned the earring was the cause.

Write down which pairs cause it. Two or three entries usually reveal a pattern, and this is the single reason so few reactions ever get traced to a specific product.

Reintroduce one pair at a time. Changing several things in one week tells you nothing.

Look beyond earrings. Jeans studs, buckles, zips, watch backs and glasses frames are all common sources.

Jewelry on last, off first. Perfume, sunscreen, lotion and soap go on before the earrings and come off after.

And once you know, act on it. Sensitization is generally permanent, so the goal shifts from curing it to reducing exposure, and reducing exposure is entirely manageable once you know what to avoid.

Presence isn't the same as release

This is the part that makes shopping confusing, and it's worth understanding before you read another product page.

Whether nickel is present in an alloy is a question about composition. Whether it's released into skin is a question about behavior, and only the second one affects her ears.

Nickel bound tightly inside a stable metal structure releases almost nothing. Nickel in an unstable alloy releases considerably more. Same element, very different outcomes.

That's why "nickel-free" is a weaker claim than it sounds. It's a statement about composition, usually untested, and often covering only the part somebody thought about. The measurement that replaces it is EN 1811, which simulates a week of skin contact in artificial sweat and measures what actually comes out.

Worth knowing: the United States has no legal limit on how much nickel an earring may release. The European Union introduced one in 1994 and tightened it in 2004. Denmark restricted it in 1992, and nickel allergy among Danish children fell from 24.8 percent to 9.2 percent between 1985 and 1998. In the United States that decision sits with you.

What we do

The relevant question is release rather than presence, which is why it's measured against EN 1811 rather than described with an adjective.

24K Pure Gold, which is pure 24 karat gold finished onto a solid S316L Surgical Steel core with Aunix™ 24K, our engineered gold finish. At 24 karat there's no alloy in the gold, so there's no room for nickel in the finish itself.

We don't make white gold or rose gold. White gold usually needs nickel to be white, and rose gold needs copper to be pink. Both colors require metals we won't put in.

The setting, the post and the butterfly back all carry the same core. I sent SGS the pieces with the largest surface area touching an ear and had all three components tested across eight pairs. Nickel release was not detected under EN 1811. Tested to ASTM F2923 and CPSIA, with lead below a tenth of the United States legal limit. Report BTO 341803/1, and you can ask me for it.

Questions parents ask next

Can nickel allergy be outgrown? Generally not. Sensitization is usually permanent, and it's managed by reducing exposure rather than by treatment.

Does she need to avoid nickel in food? Dietary nickel matters for a small number of people with severe systemic reactions. For the ordinary contact version, it isn't usually relevant. Ask your pediatrician if you're unsure.

Is white gold safe if she's nickel allergic? Not reliably. White gold is often whitened with nickel. Palladium-whitened white gold exists and costs considerably more, and the recipe is rarely stated.

Can she wear earrings at all? Almost always yes. Plenty of children who react to inexpensive jewelry wear stable, named, tested materials daily without any trouble.

How long after putting earrings in would a reaction show? Typically hours, sometimes up to a day or two. That delay is one of the more reliable ways to tell an allergic response from simple pressure.
