Sleeping in earrings hurts because it turns a few hours of contact into a continuous eight, with the weight of her head pressing the stud into the lobe against a pillow. It also increases warmth and perspiration around the metal, which speeds up anything the metal is releasing. Both problems have the same shape: time and pressure. Why earrings hurt when she's sleeping
Three things change when she lies down, and they compound.
The load direction changes. During the day an earring hangs. At night it's pressed sideways into the lobe between her head and the pillow, for hours, without her moving enough to relieve it.
Contact time triples. A stud worn from breakfast to bedtime is against skin for maybe fourteen hours with plenty of movement. Add a night and it's continuous, and continuous contact is exactly the condition that turns a small metal release into a meaningful exposure.
It gets warmer and damper. Under bedding, around a pillow, perspiration increases. Warm, damp and slightly acidic is the condition in which metals release fastest.
So a pair that's completely comfortable during the day can be sore by morning, and it isn't a contradiction.
The back is usually the culprit
If the pain is worst on waking and eases through the morning, look at the back before anything else.
A butterfly back should sit firmly, not tightly. Pushed hard onto the post, it compresses the lobe and restricts blood flow. During the day she moves enough that this is uncomfortable rather than painful. Overnight, with head weight added and no movement, it becomes genuinely sore.
Check for an indentation. Take the earring out in the morning and look. A visible dent where the back was sitting means it was too far on. There should be a small gap between back and ear.
Flat backs bring a different problem. They're often recommended for sleeping because they sit flush, and the disc creates a cavity that traps moisture against the lobe all night. Anything held damp against skin for eight hours is more likely to cause irritation, and that trade-off rarely gets mentioned.
When it's the metal instead
If the soreness itches as much as it hurts, appears with certain pairs and not others, and returns reliably with the same pair, it's more likely a reaction than pressure.
Overnight wear makes metal reactions more likely rather than differently caused. The mechanism is the same, there's just more of it: longer contact, more warmth, more perspiration.
Nickel is the most common trigger by a wide margin. Nickel allergy affects around one in five people in North America, and the American Academy of Pediatrics reported in 2020 that nickel allergic contact dermatitis in children has nearly quadrupled over three decades, with at least 1.1 million children in the United States already sensitized. Sensitization builds with cumulative exposure, and sleeping in earrings is one of the largest contributors to that total.
If the ear is hot, the redness is spreading, or there's discharge, that's your pediatrician rather than an article.
Should she sleep in them at all?
That's a real question and the honest answer has two halves.
The argument for. Taking earrings in and out daily means more handling, more chances to lose one, and for a younger child more fiddling with a piercing than is ideal. Plenty of families find continuous wear simpler and it works fine.
The argument against. It roughly doubles daily contact time, which matters more the less you know about the metal.
The resolution is straightforward. If the material is named, stable and tested, continuous wear is reasonable, and design is what needs to suit sleeping. If the material is unnamed or coated, sleeping in them accelerates everything you'd rather slow down.
In other words, it's the same answer as most questions in this category. It depends on what the earring is made of, not on the schedule.
What to change tonight
Loosen the back. Not off, just back a millimeter. Look for the gap.
Choose a low-profile stud for overnight. A tall setting has more to press into the ear and more to catch on bedding.
Keep them light. A pair of 4mm studs should weigh about as much as a paperclip.
Try a silk or satin pillowcase. Less friction than cotton, and it makes a genuine difference for a child who sleeps on her side.
Jewelry on last, off first. Anything applied at bedtime, including moisturizer and hair products, ends up sitting against the metal all night.
Give the ears a night off if they're already sore. A settled piercing won't close overnight.

The setting, the post and the butterfly back all carry the same core. Backs are commonly bought in from a different supplier than the earrings, which means a tested earring can have an untested back, and the back is the component pressing into the lobe all night. Ours were tested: eight pairs, setting, post and butterfly, with nickel release not detected under EN 1811. Tested to ASTM F2923 and CPSIA. Report BTO 341803/1.

Questions parents ask next
Is it bad to sleep in earrings generally? Not inherently. It increases contact time, which matters a great deal if the metal is unknown and much less if it's named, stable and tested.
Why does she only complain in the morning? Because the pressure builds overnight without her moving to relieve it, then eases once she's up and the lobe recovers blood flow.
Would flat backs be more comfortable for sleeping? They sit flush, which helps. They also trap moisture against the lobe and are fiddly for small hands. It's a trade rather than an upgrade.
Should I take them out every night? If the material is unknown, yes, it reduces exposure meaningfully. If it's named and tested, the reason to take them out is comfort rather than safety.
She's rolled onto one and it's sore. What now? Take it out, leave the ear alone for a day or two, and check the back tension before putting it back in. If it's hot, spreading or discharging, see your pediatrician.
